any way to switch a spinning reel handle/knob?

I have an older model quantum blue runner saltwater reel. great reel. flatheads, saltwater, etc. The handle is giving me trouble. No prob, ordered a new handle. Except they have a new model. The 60 size handle for the new model is too thick to go thru older model 60. The tech said the smaller sizes wouldn't do any good as they all have the same diameter metal rod that goes thru the reel. So....is there any way to take off just the knob and put a new knob on. Problem is old and new are riveted. I would assume it would involve sawing through rivet, getting a new rivet, and then attaching the same way. Has anyone ever attempted this?
