Stupid crappy camera

These pics are on the same trail of the humugo rubs I posted a while back.  He was a 12 point last year, not sure if this is him or not.  In no way can I count points because of the blur.  Looks like the main beam goes way out on the first buck.  Notice the stomach and the how it hangs down a little and its back isn't straight across like the smaller one.  He's certainly an older deer.  I had it up there a week and a half and it's no surprise they aren't on any pattern, even now.  I set it up parallel to the trail but then they walk perpendicular.  Stupid crap.

I had the camera set to "far" not "near."   These deer are maybe 10-15 feet from the camera.  The set for "far" is for far shots, like up to 90 feet.  That's likely why they are blurry.  Stupid user, not camera.

AND -- I have a one minute shutdown in between photos.  This area is well known to me as an area with bachelor group bucks.  I've witnessed more than once up to nine bucks together.  If history repeats itself, the smallest buck will be first and the largest will be last.  It's like clockword.  I may have missed a few in between the photos or after.  Notice they are two minutes apart.  Also, based on the past, that lead buck would actually be smaller.  I don't know, I'm not a deer, thankfully.

    Anyway ..  J

Something to consider when buying a trail cam is how you are going to use it.  The TV sure makes it sound like you just set it up, find a buck, then go kill him.  Not really the way it works, at least for the average hunter hunting pressured deer.  I mean, trail cams can do more harm than good but it's fully dependent on how you use it.  I for one, will not put out a cam on deer that I've seen during the same year.  This area in particular, I can not get a look without the cam.  If you're able to view them from a distance without a cam, I'd suggest that route.  There can't be much good about entering the woods into a bucks territory, possibly jumping him, and certainly spreading scent around, especially on a mature one.  BUT.. sometimes it's the only way to know if one exists, or still does in my case here.  As dumb as it sounds: if you want a big buck, you got to hunt where they exist.  That's why I like to use a trail cam in far away places.  I'd much rather hit one with a spotlight, than a trail cam.  I wear latex gloves and try to set them up in the rain, if possible.

Feeding is another issue to consider.  I for one, don't do it.  If I ever would, it wouldn't be excessive.  It's been said that excessive feeding can actually hurt the deer herd, its habitat, and your hunting.  Too many deer coming into close contact can spread disease and high numbers can destroy the surrounding area.  So .. you could find a great buck by feeding them but only to not see him in the area during the season because of the overbrowsing that occurs to and from the feeder.  Once the feed is gone, the deer won't browse in the area for feed.

I may have to set it out again to verify what that lead buck has got and any others I've missed.

    Silver,

Something that I have found to work well is to set the camera to take 2 pics every time it is triggered.  The first pic is usually moving and the sound of the camera either stops them for another pic or sends em running.  If you get a sec pic of whatever triggered the camera, alot of the time the deer will be looking right at ya which gives you a look at spread as well.

    dpms,

I had it set for three pics.  This camera is very quiet, although it makes a little bit of noise..probably not something even a deer could hear when walking.  The one minute shutdown thing is not something I can change, that's the least it'll go.  I get the sense there were more that passed.  Get a cuddeback I guess!!  That's a negative.  I had 3 pics from one hour before that with nothing on them.  oh well.

    Jon,

I can fix the blur on your camera, but you'll have to tell me where its hung first.

You drive within 500 yards of it everyday.  You surprised?

I'm going to take it back tonight because since it rained, I'll hang a yellow flag on it and make sure it skyscrapes the trees.

Not suprised at all. I see deer nearly every day on my drive to work. The funny thing is, I never leave for work until 10am and I still see deer in the fields.

    11 to 5 .. What hell's that crap???

You had 27 months training for that?    LOL

Just be a sucker guide duud.

    I'm kidding.
That's a little early.  Otherwise, there's a field around there that has 15-20 bucks a night, about 12 of them are 8 pts.  They come out about 7.  Pretty relaxed I'd say.  Hope to keep it that way!!!  At least until that "thump."  ahhh.. I love that noise.

My climber mounted camcorder tripod showed up, this should get interesting this fall. Also, I broke down and bought an alpine soft lock. Looks nice on the bow, functions decent, havent taken a shot with it yet, just put it on last night. And, Ive been in the market for new knee high boots. I just couldnt resist. I bought the dream season boots, they are like wearing slippers.
