Tarpon ~ Tampa Bay

Last week I fished on a charter boat with two of my best buddies that I've known
since kindergarden. We stayed in Bradenton, Florida and boated out from Anna Maria.
We targeted tarpon with spinning gear, in Tampa Bay, west of the Sunshine Bridge that
connects St. Petersburgh with Anna Maria. He is a picture of the bridge on our
first of two days out.

We used various live large minnows and crabs for bait. Below is a picture of Tom
hooked up to the only tarpon landed that day; guess-timated at 75-85 lbs. We spotted
at least 100-150 tarpon that day. Lots of chances and a few jumped/hooked-up.

Back to port

    Greg,

I was just about to put up a post asking how you did.  Looks great so far.

How did you like fishing the channel with bait vs. the flats?  I've never done the channel thing and only know what I've seen on TV and it looks way too crowded for me.  From your photos, that doesn't seem to be the case where you were.

I am pulling together my SPF clothes, sun gloves, balaclava, and other stuff today.  Wheels up on Sunday, Silver Kings up on Monday.

Can't wait for you to post more photos.  And don't forget to mention where you ate.

    Nice pics Beerman!

IF you can, ask the charter captain about "Hitler" and if he is still around. My buddies who used to fish the bridge a few years ago would always talk about the hammerhead named Hitler that would eat your tarpon as you reeled it in. A monster 17 footer.

    duncsdad,
We were fishing 12-18 feet of water most of the time. We were free-lining crabs
and also a minnow fishing 10 ft below a huge foam float. http://www.captainmatt.com/
is the link to our charter captain. Both days there was only three or four boats
that were targeting different schools of tarpon near us. It was not even close to
being crowded. It was nothing at all like the circus of boats I've seen from
Boca Grande on the TV show "Tarpon of Boca". Here is the boat we were on. Captain
Matt steered and sighted tarpon from the second level:

    goby,
I will mention it to him.
There were a few sharks around.

We decided to try out some local fish houses after being on the water all day.
    Here are a couple:

Star Fish Company, Bradenton (great grouper sandwich)

Skinny's Bradenton (COLD draft beer and good cheese burgers))

One more day out for tarpon......to be continued.

    Greg,

That sounds like a great trip.  I can't wait to see more photos.

I'm glad it wasn't like Boca.  I don't think I would enjoy that circus.

So....we headed out the second day for tarpon in Tampa Bay/Gulf of Mexico.
First Captain Matt had to net us some bait.

The weather patterns were similar to the day before; partly sunny in the
upper 80's. We no action at all in the morning (opposite of the previous day), but by mid afternoon small schools of tarpon were spotted "porpoising" on the surface. Many times they playfully take in air. Kurt finally hooked-up to a huge tarpoon.

After 35 minutes of battle, including at least five jumps, the giant tarpon
    was gone.

Captain Matt grabbed the leader a couple of times to no avail.
The 50 lb leader frayed because the tarpon broke two pole eyelets.
That was considered a caught tartpon. It was estimated to be between
    140-150 lbs.

In summary Tom and Kurt both caught a tarpon. I didn't land one this year.
We jumped about a dozen tarpon all together. I guess I had my day in the
sun last year catching a 110-120 lb tarpon. With a point and shoot camera
(Canon A540)it's really hard to take a picture of a fighting tarpon. FYI,
the guide charged us $800/8 hours. This was split three ways. We fished a
total of 16 hours. With the tip we figured we spent around $35 an hour each.
I can afford to splurge only once a year for this, but it's worth it!

Besides the fishing, the highlight of the trip (for me) was our trek to the
Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburgh. His paintings are fantastic in person.
If you ever go to this museaum make sure you take the narrated tour.

    Greg, Kurt and Tom.

Here is a short video clip of me fighting a 120# tarpoon,
a year ago in Key West, Florida. This may not work. If
it doesn't, maybe somebody can figure out how to post it.

    Greg,

Great photos as usual.  It sounds like you guys had an awesome time.

You are right about the price of a tarpon being worth it.

We got back Sunday.  I'll post photos on the erie forum.

$800 for a days fishing? Ouch. I just spent $500 a day (plus tip) for two days in the Keys recently. And each day we were out at 7 am and in at 7pm.

I guess I got my monies worth. Are all the guides in the Tampa area that much or what was the deal with this guy that made him more expensive?

We split the guide fees three ways and were on the water about 9 hours each day.
It was very pricey, but once a year I can splurge.

I saw on the travel channel that the Sunshine Skyline Bridge pictured above
is 4 miles long. The picture I took was 8-9 miles away. (first picture on this thread)
