bootfoot wader help

i am looking for breathable bootfoot waders with cleated soles, but can only find felt.  any ideas?  really don't want to spend over 175.00.  i have never owned stocking foot waders and spent the evening trying some on, but they all felt pretty uncomfortable.  is it me?  (i have been wading for over 30 years and have only had 4 pairs of waders, so i have been around the block).

can felt be removed and studs put in or will they lack a heel?  forgot to look.  for any help, i will remember you when i hit the lottery.  thanks..........rich

Be sure & check the weight factor. Friend of mine who always used bootfoot said he was switching to stockingfoot because of the weight. When I lifted his, I remarked they're heavy - surprised you didn't do it sooner! He said the 5mm were heavier!! Don't know about breathables!

joe, the stores around here have a lousy selection.  could only find two pairs of boots that fit, and one pair of stockingfoot waders, and the stocking part was twice the width of my feet.  am going to get another pair of cabelas deneir waders until i can find something with studs and a good foot fit.

wish mikastorm was able to get on.  he had a pair of cabelas stockingfoot (?) waders at the one fly that looked pretty nice.  guess i will wait til mid summer and try again.

    Rap,
Call fish usa and talk to one of the guys.  They managed to find a pair that fit my fat behind and they sell cleated shoes too. And they are not that expensive.

I bought a pair of 3mm Hodgeman for under $75.00 with velcro fasteners for the straps, because my 5mm Cabelas's were too hot and their suspenders keep slipping down - was a little apprehensive about the velcro, but these have worked out great! They're form fitting, go on and off easily.

A fellow driving a big Dodge with a snowplow asked me why I didn't buy a good pair of waders - that he had paid $400.00 for Sims! I didn't say anything, but thought I could buy several pairs of the one I had (which are serving me well) to his one pair, plus have suitable, sufficient material from the old ones for patching if the need arose. also thought the price for plowing snow must be high too. Don't misunderstand, he was friendly and trying to be helpful, but for the money the less expensive ones have served me well!

One other tip re: neoprene - if you have trouble getting them on and off - wear support hose (I had for varicose veins) or panty hose. They'll slide right on ond off!

jon, i have a pair of neoprene already.  hate em, but they work in the cold.  i was looking for breathables.  still going to look.  i did order a pair of cabela's 420 denier.  they are lightweight but not breatheable.  last pair lasted about 15 years.  this is just a temporary fix.  i will find a pair of breathables and a pair of studded boots that fit right and within my budget (<200) before fall.  thanks for the input.

dru, kinda stuck with the neos.  look nice hanging next the my hippers.  will suffer with the deniers until i find what i want.

question: can the felt be removed and studs put on?  do the boots have a heel under the felt?  should have looked better.

i assume you're talking about felt on a bootfoot wader?  i would say you're gonna have trouble doing that without ruining the boot.

Okay, you say you want a studded boot foot breathable.. not gonna happen.. Especially under 200 bucks.. may I suggest saving your pennies because the old saying  here " dollar wise penney stupid" applies.. I own three pair of chest waders for this 4 season region. neoprene boot cabelas for subzero.. hodgeman proguide series felt soled boot insulated and very durable breathables.. and pair of light weight gortex simms rivertech stockings with the optional matching felt soled simms hiker boots ideal for warmer weather. You get quality and warranty unmatched for pennies on the dollar over the normal wear and tear life of these waders.. you on a budgit, I recommend hodgemans lower line of breathables you can try both boot and stockings at a gander mt. As for studs , i use the optional cleats available for the few times i find cleats necessary, say up in the sr during snow/ice conditions. hope this helps.. be sure to wear your chest wader waiste belt for safety too in high water. glty

backin, as i said, i have been doing the cold water wading thing since the mid 70s.  i have neoprene and light weight, and did find a pair of boots with lug soles fairly cheap that fit.  could even buy the simms stud retro for 20 bux and put them in.  the biggest problem that i am having is finding the stockingfoot waders to fit my feet. the hogdman booties are too long and seem to bunch up in the toe.  maybe wool socks would work to fill in the gap, but i really don't want to wear wool in the summer.

as for bootfoot studded, i was afraid i would not be able to find any.  with the fact that felt would begin to go by the way-side, i was hoping some manufacturer had already started to make a studded bootfoot wader.  guess not.  i would be happy to find a pair of bootfooted breathables with lug soles.  may have to travel to find them though.

You will be better off keeping it simple and going with a a size stocking that fits you, and buying separate wading stud boots. Point is that wader manufacturers are not making boot waders with studs in breathables. Perhaps someday they will be available, for now it is felt with korkers/stabilicers/etc. or stockings with studded wading boots.
