I haven't collected crawlers in years. That was a big part of growing up as a kid. We would sometimes purposly wet the yard prior to dark some times if it was not raining. Always had worm beds going.

Anybody on here still keep there own worm farms ?

I really don't do good with nightcrawlers iceout,at least not in the resi. I like using small chrome lures close to the bottom along the shore. Stream fishing is another story. Hey looks like a washout for most streams this opener.

I've gone through a few dozen on my panfish trips already, not as expensive as ice bait but still.

I have always though of keeping a worm bed but never really had the initiative, anybody think it'd be worth it?

I seen where the majority of nightcrawlers for bait come from on that "Dirty Jobs" show.. the pluck em up in canada on the farms. I bet any grassy golf coarse or park has easy pickings. I have an old styrofoam bucket that I plan on using for the Oneida walleye trip this year. No doubt a half night crawler on a 1/4 oz jig is deadly , also those worm harness rigs are worth drifting too.

I love using crawlers but the older I get the faster those darn things move. Most nights I only wind up with handfuls of wet grass and worm castings. Guess it's mail order for me.lol

Pickin worms was a tradition, as Brian said we used to wet the lawn or go to the golf course where they always had the short grass and nice wet greens. But now I have become lazy in the pickin and bedding. I buy my bait, it sucks but it's mostly out of convenience.
One type of worm that I find to be the absolute best are Dillies, or Dills. They are from Canada and you can get them pretty much everywhere in the ADK's. What makes them great to me is that they are like runt night crawlers. They are about 2>3" long but just as fat as a crawler. I don't like crawlers because they are to big and garden worms seem to small. These Dillies are perfect, esp. on a wobblers rig...

Dudes-  I am watching the History Channel as I write this (as usual) and tonight's "Modern Marvels" is about friggin' NGHTCRAWLERS!!!  It is actually pretty funny.

Apparently, Toronto Canada is like the Nightcrawler Capital of the World.  They have BUSSES of migrant workers up there with coffee cans stapped to one ankle (to keep from having to carry it) and a can of sawdust strapped to the other ankle (to keep their hands from getting to slimy to grip the worms).  They wear infrared nightvision gear and everything.  Like migrant bean pickers in the South- except that are grabbin' WORMS!

They say a "good" worm picker can harvest 1500-2000 nightcrawlers in one night's work.

Holy Smokes!!!  Reel Force, I think you may have met your match with those guys, huh?

Although- in all fairness- I don't think anyone can catch emerald shiners like you did last summer.  What a learning experience that was.  I was out there every night after that getting some 'hot lunch' for my pet bass.

Last but not least- the world record Canadian Wriggler was TWENTY TWO FEET LONG!
