Old School Mitchell Reels

Does anyone still use the "old style" Mitchell spinning reels, like the 300,308,310, etc.? I currently have two, but have had many more over the years. I really like these reels and used to see people with them everywhere, but not so much anymore. Just wonderin if anyone else is usin them now.

304-300-300C-308-408....all made in france.  have given away some old 300s to friends who still use them.  i now use shimano symetres, saharas and some of the better quantums, but there will never be another reel like the venerable mitchell.  mine now repose on a bookcase.

Although I do like my new stuff, there is something about the old reels that make them a pleasure to use. Nostalgic reasons withheld, most of the C3's and early 300' s DAM reels etc. exhibit a durable quality that you will not find encorporated into the new stuff today. What these reels lack in refinement, they more than make up for in their excellent durability and ease of being able to service when they need attention. All said, a few buds and I made an effort to hang up the fancy expensive stuff this year and get back to some basics and I am glad we did, as the season progressed I was constantly reminded of the early days spent with my father and uncle, not rushing to get streamside, not caring about anything except having a good time, which is exactly what we did this year.

Had a 300 and a 308 for years.  The 308 was great for smallies with ultralite. My son lost the 300 on a canoe trip, and I picked up another, almost mint with extra spool and handle for............15 bucks on Ebay a couple of years ago.  I wouldn't even  use new ones - junk. I still use my 300 occasionally.

I heard the quality of the new ones is not very good.  I have a really old one that my grandfather gave me.  I love it, but I'm not sure what model it is...

i used to really like the 300's,till i got hooked on steely fishing.blew the bearings outta the 1st 1,sent it back, and got a free 1.blew the bearings outta that 1,then went and bought a quantum and have had no problems since.other than that, everything was really sweet on the 300 providing i didnt have anything on the other end that would push the drag.

A good friend of mine collects the 300's and 308's as a hobby. He has at least 50 of them. He is a die hard. He has them dating back to when they first came out all the way up until the Garcia was bought out I believe.

not really.  it was the economy version.  the gear body was round instead of oval.  spool sizes were about the same.  still had the muscle of the 300s.  i believe my 304 cost 8.99 brand new and the 300 was 12.99 (although they could be had for 9.99 on labor day at a local store).  these were prices from the late 60s.

    I have 3 300's 1 is a junker
    3 310's 1 is for parts
    1 308x
    1 304
    8 308's and 2 bunches of 308 parts and  1 309 plus a few spools for the 308's and 300's.
I had a 5' garcia conolon  rod that 6-8" busted off the tip.I wish i still had that one.
Dads CAP/304 is on and old fiberglass ST. CROIX  rod that had the tip busted off,he put a new tip on and it works ok.

I'm gonna fish more and work less.

steve, i still have my dad's st. croix glass rod with a 300 on it.  cannot believe how whippy those medium actions were.  i had some conolon glass rods in the 60s and they were the same.  still have an ul conolon with a 408 that i used until a few years ago.

I have the 309's and the 301's which are the left handed versions with the handle on the right side. They have been in storage for at least 10-15 years.

I still have a bunch of the different ones from france from my dad. I heard the newer ones are junk but the old ones like I have do last and maintenance is easy on them. Even replacing parts is a snap since they are not as advanced like todays reels. I still use my 300's for bass and pike but for carp I have my big pit shimanos since they can handle a large fish a ton better.

i gave a friend one of my 300s made in france years ago and he still uses it along the coastal waters of florida every year.  said it is the best reel he has ever had.  i did buy one imported 300 (made in the far east) and it was noticeably different.  traded it for a fresh tube of preparation h.......

I have them, but don't use them anymore, with the exception of 302 saltwater reel, I use for salmon! Also have what is left of their fly reel with drag after salmon tore it apart!
