Allegheny River, Franklin
plan on fishing by canoe around Franklin this weekend. Any one have info on the current water level. First time fishing there this late in the year.

No weeds to speak of. Great time to fish, you just have to be a hunter. Find them and you'll do well, just realize at this time of year searching will pay off. Holes, tails of pools, riffles.
That said, get a good loud buzzbait, chartreuse works well. Use weighted tubes, as well as Rapalas. Carry worms just in case.
Last week the river fishing as a bit slow but I did okay. Saturday was one of my best days this year on French Creek, once i went into the hunting rather than "casting all over the place" mode!

Fishing North of Emlenton this past weekend was a posted, "low and clear". All you needed to catch fish was a silver Pims Minnow, 1/8 oz spinner rig with chartruse skirt or a chartruse "Little N". Top water's were not working for us. We caught a whole lot of little bass and 3 @ 18"+. Not much in between! We didn't even try anything else until Sunday when my son seined some helegramites and did very well with them. Most all the 'daytime' fish were in the faster waters.

I find them under my tent tarps every year, hold em like a snake behind the head. I like to tail hook em.

They are the best live bait for smallies, and if you hook them good they will stay on for more than one fish.

We hook the helegramites under the collar band that is right behind the head. I use a live bait hook, and while holding the helegramite by the collar band, start the hook from the front and go under the band and out the back side. I also take a pair of neddle nosed pliers and cut the hooks off the tail end. The bait will use it's hooks to grab the botton while you drift the bait. Depending on where the bait is used I will suspend the baits under a bobber or in deeper water I just use a tiny split shot about 18" above the bait and let it bounce off the botom. Another question no one asked, How to keep the baits? We always put the baits in a metal minnow bucket or a wooden box (mine is 20 years old). We put leaves and/or grass into the containers and just keep everything moist. The grass/leaves keeps the bait seperated and makes it easier to pick out the one you want. We also put the bucket/box in the "beer fridge"  when storing the baits. Putting them in a minnow bucket filled with water makes it difficult to remove the bait without getting pinched. Yes, the pinchers do work!!!, unlike the adult Dobson Flies where the pinchers are just for show.

your exactly right jet, i was taught this lesson
years ago, and unless you cut the pinchers off
they will hang on to rocks etc.
good advise for persons new to using them for
bait

I always lift rocks , logs, ect.. around moist areas of the creek , you'll be suprised how many you can find under your tent in certain locations when camping creekside.
