Wading Presque Isle in Long Pond

Is Long Pond wadable?  I plan on fishing back in the lagoons this year, even if I sink up to my balls!!!  Just wondering if anyone else wades in the lagoons.

It is muddy in the spring untill the grass starts growing, but by then (summer) it's a salad bar and unfishable! Unless you like to throw frogs into the thick stuff! (insert awesome tip icon here)

But here's a tip for you if you want to wade it or anywhere else that is muddy....

Use a small pair of snow shoes...They work great in the mud!

Don't let this discourage you though! You can find PLENTY of water back there to fish without even getting your feet wet! Walk in at the bridge at Misery Bay and there is a trail you can walk. About every 20 feet there will be a spot cleared out where you can fish. That entire canal holds fish and you'll be surpised how many you catch before you even make it to Long Pond. At the second bend there is a concrete wall you can cast from where long pond is....This place holds a good amount of bass and pike! I worm fish this area and put it about 100 or more hours fishing this area in the spring.

    Good luck!

I love the lagoons in early season -- espescially if you're dealing with some stiffer winds out on the main bay since you can find some decently protected areas.

You can also park on the main PI drive (before you get to Misery) where Long Pond is on your left.  There's usually a few trails that people use to get back there but sometimes can be difficult if you're the one blazing the trail for the first time this Spring.

After thinking for a minute, I realized I was refering to Long Pond, but was thinking about Big Pond!
Long pond is on the Marina Lake side...

    So....

Yes! You can wade it with no problem! At the bridge you can walk in and fish that entire canal to Long Pond! But I will tell you this much, Long Pond is shallow and doesn't hold many fish! The canal that is by the road does, though! Once the lilly pads start rising, texas rig worm it....I catch a bunch by just walking arouns slowly through there in waist deep of water!

That whole area back there is one of my favorite places to fish.

I don't always snag fish, but when I do...

We are looking to get some early spring panfish, so I imagine it should hold panfish?

We usually hit Thompson Bay and the Horseshoe Pond, but not until mid May or later.  We figure the water will warm quicker in the lagoons and was just wondering how it is to wade.

We'll have to give Long Pond a shot.

My buddy and I fished the lagoons last spring and had a blast. Our plan was to put our canoe in off the south pier and paddle over for the evening and night bite the first day. All went well until an officer spotted us and told us we had to leave the park. We researched to make sure it was ok to be on the water inside the park after dark but the officer wasnt going for it and made us leave anyhow. We had already began nailing bass and pike with swimbaits that evening before he booted us. So off we went back across the bay irritated that our plan was fouled. We returned early the next day and fished hard catching more bass on swimbaits but didnt really start catchin until we talked to a fella cruising through in a kayak. He showed us what he was throwin and we had a few rapalas like his with us. It was game on after that tip but my buddy outfished me that day. Our last day was spent in Ohio fishing. That was a tough day of fishing for us but overall it was a great weekend.

A few months later we ran into another officer and we questioned him about night fishing the lagoons. He told us it was legal to do and wasnt sure why the officer we encountered made us leave. Anyone else ever try to nightfish the lagoons? We are headin back up soon with this same plan in mind.

YOu're not allowed on the peninsula after sundown outside of a vehicle. From what you described, officer #1 was correct but #2 was mistaken.

Technically we werent on the peninsula. We parked at south pier and paddled over. If your on the water the entire time then is it legal?

Being "on the water" but "on" the peninsula is probably a grey area and why you got caught up.

Yes, that's a good area for panfish! If you haven't already, hit Marina Lake's shorelines, too! LOADED with panies!

Wasn't there some of the "useless" term "spot burning" given? That whole term is a joke!

    Slippery,

That's all public land owned by PA, so why would it be spot burning?

Well, here is what i know.  boats within 150 yards of the presque Isle are going to be asked to leave after dark. Somehow considered Isle property. More than one occation where boats where tied together watching the sunset and stayed there after it went down only to be visited by the officers and asked to leave. No citations but yes asked to leave.

This in reply to no-one! It may not/may have been, "spot burning?" I'm so tired of hearing about people beaching about this oxymoron! I think this is the biggest joke/flabbergast I've heard about when concerning fishing in my 31-32 years! If you want to tell where you caught a fish, so be it! But if you go k and its posted, pat yourself on the back! I'm just tired of hearing about this "spot burning" thing on all these boards! ITS A JOKE BY PEOPLE WHO CAN'T CONTROL THEY'RE OWN BIG HEAD!

Watch out for ticks while walking in the grass at Presque Isle.  You will be covered with them if you get off the paths.

I use the thick velcro blousing rubbers on my wrists and ankles, if not wearing waders. From my experience, once inside the clothing, the tick likes to crawl up to tender areas to attach themselves. It may have been the wrong time of year but the last time I walked the path from the corner of the monument parking lot to the two docks/corner it was loaded with horse flies.

    Great place to fish though.
