I would probably not recommend hooking the worm or whatever texas style like in this rig but you can do whatever you want.  They make alot of hooks now designed for drop shotting,  also there was the misconception that this rig was only used vertically for deep fish, not true.  its very successful cast to cover or anywhere and worked properly.

I use to rig my drop shots like the above links, but have since changed over to standout hooks!
They are the real deal!! Very easy and effective for fishinf fatter bodied Gobys and the like! You can really present a vertical presentation with the "deadest" of dead sticking!

I think that pic shows a split ring, but I just tie it with a clinch knot and leave a long tag end for the weight!
Obviously thread it through the eye of the hook before you tie the weight on!

You will get twice the action with this hook compaired to a conventional setup. I don't even "twitch" it.....Just let it sit, and the boat does most of the work!

The best part about using these is that your bait will always hold off to the side. Rigging it the regular way won't get the same effect. When you just let the bait sit than it will "sag" down and look straight up.

Sometimes, just letting it sit in the strike zone without moving it at all will produce more bites!

And if you really want to fish a deadly combination.....

Rig this with a floating worm! HOLD ON!!!

Silly question but I gotta ask......why wouldn't an Aberdeen style hook do the same thing?

If it's just sitting still than the weight of the bait will pull the hook down no matter what knot you use or bait you have on! I've tried it with all differant kinds....And yes, I used my kids fish tanks for testing!

You could put a 2 oz weight on the standout hook and it will stay straight out!

In the Stand Out hook diagram below make sure you tie the hook at the top eye. The bottom eye just holds the hook out. [Thus, Stand Out] Use Palomar Knot.

I have yet to try that hook ..haven't used the rig yet either but looking forward to trying this from shore instead of the traditional rig.. egg swivel leader to hook. Is this better from a boat or best all around rig? one article mentioned rainbow was caught using this.. can't imagine this for line shy steelhead or other sharp eye fish. But I can see how it would work great in deeper water from a boat.

It fishes best vertically, could be a little tough from shore.

I tried the Stand Out hook with poor results. The are just not sharp enough for my liking, went back to a Gamakatsu Split Shot/Drop Shot hook.

I use to use the Gammie DS hooks til I had a few fish break them.  I've since switched to Owner Mosquito's.  More variety of sizes and much sharper than the Gammies
