Not saying that they won't catch fish, but if they were as good as the manu. want you to think they are, I would think that they are all that the pros would use.Don't you?   sam

yeah but all pros have sponsors and would probrobly lose them if they start saying how good the banjo is and not their sponsors lures so honestly i doubt we could ever know if a pro is using the banjo unless they are sponsored by them but even then thats only one or two guys.

If the pros were using them and catching they wouldn't need sponsors because they would be winning all the money. They do have a nice action to them but I don't see them being the holy grail to fishing.

lol yeah thats true but dont they get free lures from their sponsors so if they dont have sponsors then they would just have to buy the lures themselves and lets face it they aint cheap

i started using them when they first came out and they worked really well for bass and trout.  they have changed the minnow bodies several times over the years and i dont like the newer minnow bodies, they just dont have the right action to them.  instead of using the banjo minnow bodies i've switched to some strike king jerkbait minnow bodies and just rigged them up as you would a banjo minnow.  under the right conditions banjo minnows can work extremely well.

If you guys are looking for that certain action like the banjo just taking a regular 6inch worm with no weight and a smaller hook will allow it to have a ton more movement. You can do it with a lizard, worm whatever you want. It will still get that injured jerk you want and on the drop no movement.

I think they're great, at times.  They work good for bass and pike.  Occasionally I use them for trout.  I don't catch much on them in deeper water, but you can't beat it for shallow, weedy water.

    Skeeter,

I think you'll like them. I have a set just like yours. I also just bought a bait cast reel. Not the top of line, but I wanted to see if I like it. And if it will do what I want & banjo i'm going to be in hog heaven.

Since renosky's started marketing banjo minnow in the mid 90's i have been catching fish on them.  Renosky's used to have open houses where you could buy em by the pound, and i still have banjo's left.  They just plain work. rig them any way you want. i catch bass on them whacky style, i catch them with jig heads, i catch fish on them texas rigged.  The action is great using a spinning rod and 8 pound test.  Trout, smallie, largemouth, catfish, and crappie and all candidates ready to eat a banjo.  I fished crooked creek lake last year with a buddy in his 12' jon boat while a bunch of guys around us were having a friendly tournament with their 40k bass rigs and who was catching all the fish? Me and my buddy on curly tail banjo's on a jig head.  must have caught 15 to 20 fish on em while we saw maybe 2 fish get pulled in by the other boats. Im tellin you, i have just as good luck with banjos as i do with worms...

just fish them and you will catch fish

Like I said in that other Banjo Minnow thread, I was a disbeliever.  Thought they were a gimmick, but then saw my buddy consistently land huge smallmouth with them.  They work.

I used them years ago when i got the kit,  they worked well for smallmouth bass especially in clear water.  After i used the kit up i never bought anymore, i went to zoom flukes cause they were more readily available.  I may buy more banjos in the near future now that someone posted a link to buy them on the web...

They definately work. I used them for years. If you have agressive fish, they are phenomenal. If you have sluggish fish, well thats a different story. I have seen fish stare at a banjo and want nothing to do with it. I throw on a wacky senko or tiki and BOOM. It all depends.

I have been converted though to senko's, tiki's whatever. I think the results are maybe even better with these baits. It just takes alot of patience.

nothing beats rippin a banjo through the water with all that "spastic" action and watching it get clobbered though. tight lines, good luck

Banjo Minnow kit 3 years ago as a gag gift at a party.  I have used then with great success.

However, I wish the minnows came in a smaller size.  I have gotten many hits on the minnows by smaller bass that don't seem to hold onto the bait.  So I only use them on larger lakes, Lake erie, etc.

I even got 2 nice walleyes last year using the Banjo Minnows.

AS SEEN ON TV! THAT SAYS IT ALL, A friend gave me a bunch of them but when the good old green jig and a minnow works why change? A good friend of mine who is also a charter captain always says "THERE JUST STUPID FISH" That is good theory, if it worked 50 years ago it still will work. The fish didn't get any smarter!

no doubt.  less detail as well.  It's like the old mold was too complicated.  It also looks like the new banjos are a single pour of plasticine with a contrasting color over the belly.

Has anybody ever had any consistent luck with Banjo Minnows on steelhead, brown trout, or lake trout in the Great Lakes and their tribs?

RE: BANJO MINNOW!!! 2011/06/25 23:03:09 (permalink)
the original banjo minnows were great. i remember when they first came out my brother and i did so well with them that i can remember having people try to buy them off of use when that saw how many fish we were catching. trout and bass couldnt resist those things. then they started changing the shape of the minnow bodies and the newer ones just didnt have the right action to them.

the thing that sets the banjo minnows apart from other lures is that you dont insert the hook into the body of the lure, so the entire lure remains free to wiggle around. with a texas rigged bait the hook makes half of bait rigid so you dont get as much action from the lure.

what i started doing is getting strike king jerk shad soft plastics and rigging them with the banjo hook/corkscrews. the jerk shads have really good action, better than the banjo minnows.
