Best Breathables for under $200
I have been reading a lot about how guys like to use breathables year round and I am looking for a set of breathables for warm weather fishing and might try them in winter for steelies. What do you think are the best for under $200. List Brand, Model, and Price.

I've gotten almost 5 years out of Frog Toggs breathable waist highs, 90 bucks, from Fishusa. That's conservatively 250 uses. No leaks, basically carefree. For 200 bucks you can get both the waist highs and chest waders. I've worn them in 20 degree weather, and 70 degrees. Just adjust the layering for the temp.

I went through 3 pairs of Cabelas dry plus both gold and premium waders in 4 years. But they exchanged them every time. After the third pair, I had had enough, took the store credit and upgraded to Simms Freestone, this is their 3rd year, and still no leaks.

Hmmmmmm, love to know what you are doing that I'm not. Had the first pair for 3 years before I got a leak and I'm on my third year with the new pair and they are still going strong. I will let 71GTO chime in if he reads this thread with his experience to elaborate but will tell you what I kknow of his experience. He had a pair for 5 years. Wore them a ton. He fishes Erie only a handful of times a year like me but fishes the Yough 3 to 4 times a WEEK year round. That's pretty impressive to me. Once they started leaking....they replaced a 5 YEAR OLD PAIR OF BREATHABLES free of charge. I believe he is on his 3rd season with them. My question to you would be are you buying the right size? They aren't supposed to fit tight, lol. Can't wear them through the jaggers while you are deer hunting either. So why are you having such problems?? MY guess is user error..... MO

So why are you having such problems?? MY guess is user error..... MO They weren't "tight", lol., I'm not a huge guy 6'0 - 200lb But you may be right. I'm a bit hard on all of my equipment, I do do some bush whacking too, and alot of hiking, so... But the major flaw I found was this: The seams. The pairs I had they had a seam like blue jeans. Next time you're wearing jeans look down at the inside seams, around and below the knees. The seams are external, and they flare out a little bit below the knees. On a pair of jeans the two seams rub, and in my waders they rubbed and wore holes on the inside of both knees, just from normal walking. Simms waders and some other mfgrs have internal seams that are taped, welded and glued only (the Cabelas I had were taped, folded and stitched). This happened to all three pairs of Cabelas waders I had, then I realized what the problem was. IMO, it was a fatal design flaw. My Simms don't rub at all. Maybe I do more walking than you and 71gto? who knows. I'm glad you're happy with yours, but I won't buy them again. I agree their return policy is excellent!

I never noticed the seam thing. I will look next time I have them on. I walk a fair amount in Erie, but only get there if lucky 10 times a year. So maybe you do walk a lot more. MO

I'm on my second pair of Cabela's Dry Plus in three years. My first pair blew out in 18 months and I have about that many months on my new pair. I busted alot of brush with the old ones and these new ones and they are holding up OK. Too early for the breathables though, I'm off to Cabelas tomorrow to pick up some 5mm neoprenes for use this spring.

LLbean is getting into the act bigtime now. Their warranty is unbeatable, in my opinion and 100's$ less than Simms, etc. Many choices under 200$.

Ditto to Steelheadmans' post. I've got a pair of Simms Lightweights, which are now the L2s'. They are about to enter their 9th season. I' m fortunate to be able to fish 25 to 35 times a year on Laurel Hill & the Yough. I bought them 9 years ago at International Angler for $200.00 and I think the L2s' are $215.00 now. I think it was a good investment.

For the past few years I have been a fan of Simms waders. Last pair I bought was the first g3's. Loved em and got several years out of them. I still have to send them in with the possibility of getting fixed but I doubt they will. The problem is in the feet <leak> Good friend of mine was also a big fan of simms for years. They werent able to fix his waders so he chose 2 pair of cabelas and has been loving em. He rotates them so they dont wear out as fast. Not sure of the model but I believe its not their top of the line pair, but the one next. For both pair I believe he told me he paid 250 bucks I have been waiting for my William and Josephs and they should be here any day now. They offer a warranty as well. 90 bucks for their top of the line pair and 50 for the cheaper ones. If they cant repair them they send u a new pair for the above prices. Another friend loves his redingtons as well

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
