Circle Hooks

Anyone use circle hooks for steelhead in the tribs? I was thinking about giving them a try. Anyone have any experience with them?

for bait fishing such as egg sacks and minnows they work well for me...just remember to give a quick pull and not a hard jerk.

I suggest a very large treble, it will increase your hookup rate!

I tried them, couple strikes, no hookups, there seems to be a certain technique that I don't have.

I have used them for over two seasons.  I have found that although the hook set is very conveniently located in the corner of their mouth, you will have more misses.  You can't set the hook as you tradionally would, instead you have to gradually raise the rod.  If the fish is pointed at you, you will miss the fish, almost everytime.  So the longer the drift the larger the chance of a miss.  I would say my miss rate is about 20-30% with circle hooks, and 10-20% using a different Daiichi hook.  (I forget the hook, but it's an offset, Daiichi hook).  The circle hook will hold a single egg or two better, so you need to weigh the pros and cons.

    Hope this helps!

agreeded...Tex, well said. I have tied sucker spawn on circles & found over the last 2 seasons the circles seem to require a right angle to get a good hook set. Fish that took towards the end of drifts were tricky to get hooked. As Tex said most fish are hooked in the side of the mouth.Save the circles for carp & cats. Any strong (sharp) wire hooks will serve you well on the tribs.

OK thanks for the info. What hooks do you recommend for live bait in the tribs? I was using Daiichi Octopus but I cant find them online in small sizes.

I use a 2161 (I think that is the number) Daiichi bronze salmon egg hook, size 12 usually.  I have experimented with size 10 & 14 but think 12 is the best for normal conditions.  These work great for me.

Raven hooks, Blackbird hooks, anything that won't bend. These fish are not picky unless it is early season low and clear.

I've had great luck with circle hooks when fished with shinners.  A size 10 octopus works best, 8 is a little big for the smaller minnies, and 12 and smaller just don't hook up as well.  As stated earlier, you need to just slow lift the rod during a a bite, gets em every time.  For flies i use the dia. salmon steelhead.  key here is that they don't hold the flies as long as the live bait.

Forget the circle hooks for Steelhead, save them for still fishing rivers and lakes with bait. I've never had much of a problem with Steelhead swallowing hooks.

to those who have been following the Dr. trout discussion on two more from the clarion, I wanted to bring this discussion back to the forefront.  Also there is a great article on circl hooks for bass fishing in "in fisherman" this month.  One thing I note is the.  Different style of fishing needed than the old yank it as hard as you can to set the hook philosophy.  Old dogs can be taught new tricks and you don't lose as many hooks due to deep throat penetration (no pun intended).

Also,  While I'm thinking of it I would llike to suggest to Dr. Trout the following:
In order to cut down the great number of postings on these boards, perhaps just start one subject as Dr. Trout updates and then post to the area each time you enter a new post.  Just a suggestion that you may want to consider.
Have a great day everyone.  Sat. the 9th of may 2010 ; retuning to winter tonight; cover yor plants!

I have seen a lot of guys have some success with them on the streams, especially in the sections of Walnut that are only particularly shallow. On the other hand, I struggle when using them.

    Bigger is better.
