Not Gone Fishing - Number of Anglers Drops

Every 5 years the US Fish and Wildlife Service does a national survey on fishing and hunting. Preliminary numbers for the new study show a real drop in fishing, as young people fail to take up the sport.

This doesn’t mean Americans aren’t spending time outdoors or interacting with wild animals; “wildlife watching” is up 8 percent since 2001. They’re just choosing not to kill them so much.

it may be down over the whole country, but it seems to me (at least in our neck of the woods) that there are more and more people on the water every year.

Here is a part of the article...

Fishing participation fell three times the rate of hunting over five years—down a jaw-dropping 23 percent in the Great Lakes region.

Who is doing this survey? Have they not herd of Steelhead alley? Seems to me there are way and I mean way more people fishing the great lakes region then ever before..Funny I do noyt remmeber ever being survied what about anyone else?

SO MANY FISH SO LITTLE TIME.
WHY ARE ALL THE PLACES I HAVE YET 2 FISH SO FAR AWAY?

I get more out of money spent on a license than on anything else I purchase.  It's money well spent.  Sure, we all have other expenses, but the memory of my 4 yr. old son hooking his first steelhead on my fly rod is something I'll never forget.  Well worth the money!!

I can believe that the genral surveys may show that it is down however I don't believe in surveys as they can be slanted. Just look at Al Gore if you wan to see slanted information.  My biggest problem is taking them fishing and they can hardly get a bit or a fish.  I remember Lake Arthur when my nephew got bored because when he threw the line in he had a bluegill or carppie immediately and began to play with the minnows.  Can't make that happen anymore.

I was asked a few questions last month early on a Sunday morning while wading PI Bay by a guy from the PFBC.  He asked how often do I fish, how far did I travel, how much would I spend that day including travel, etc.  He was a young guy and very knowledgable.
