Question on Jet Divers

Is it necessary to use a Dipsey Diver rod if using jet divers or is a lighter trolling rod sufficient?

I have never used jets a lot, but a lot of guys that use them in the western basin are using lighter rods.  What are you using for dipsy rods?  I only have one telephone dipsy rod (it was a gift) and it rarely comes out, I prefer dipsy rods with lots of "rear end" and a faster tip, makes fighting fish more fun and easier to detect strikes from even junk fish.

your typical 8-8'6'' downrigger rod works with jets just fine...i have the 8'6'' heartlands off fishusa.com that work extremly well...

Dipsys im runnin the big 9'6'' Medium heavy heartland rods...they are great as well...

I bought two of Okuma Dipsy Diver Rods that 10-ft long.  My plan was to run two Dipsey Diver rods on the outside and two jets on the inside.  I have no downriggers and have never trolled for walleyes before.  I'm picking up my boat on Thursday and am going fishing even I don't have my electronics installed in time.

BTW, is it okay to run the cookie size Dipsy's on a medium action 8-6 rod?

    Thanks for the responses.

Your 10ft rods will work well with the dipsy's but a normal rigger rod will bust in half.  Your regular rods will pull jets with no problems, but they won't catch fish behind the boat...they need to be ran on planner boards.  So, run your dipsy's at 3.5 setting at ??? back and add two more dipsy rods on the inside at 2 setting ??? back to reach the fish.  Jets are useless without boards unless you run them a half mile back and make huge turns.

Hey fivedog, That set will work fine w/ two jets out the back and two dipsey's out the sides. We run that setup all the time with great results. I like the harness's on the jets also, when you are zig zaging and the jets stall out alittle thats when the big dogs will slam it!

I run my Erie set up w/ 4 dipsys, sometimes 6.  w/ 4 dipsys I run mono dipsy on 3.5 and braid inside it at 3.5.  When running 6, I run wire inside braid at 1.5 and go DEEP.

Almost always run dipseys @ 3-3.5 on the outside - rods 8 1/2'   Riggers inside of course - same rods - 8 1/2'. Don't seem to need planers w/2 guys leadcore - shorter rod.  Never had a problem with this setup. Have jets, never used them. Braid for the dipseys and mono for the riggers. the usual setup.   Dave
