ok, one more question from me on yaks, cant seem to find a answer anywhere, does my yak have to be registered with the boat commission like a normal boat?

Yes and no.

I dont want to give out misinformation, so read up on it.  From what I understand, you only need it if the property owner requires it (USACE does), and if you want to use a PAFBC launch.  I think.

Since mine will eventually be on the Conemaugh, I'll need it, so once I got to that point, I stopped reading about when and where you need it, because I'll have it.

Anyone have any more info on Yaks? looking at the Hobies now I really like the option of the footpedals for lakes but in reality mine will prob see more time on the Yawk than anywhere.

i have a hobie revolution that i float on the yough all the time, the pedals do hit rocks from time to time but just be aware and get out of the way, i miss most of them now....you can also take the pedals out if you want and use it like a regular kayak

I am a proud owner of an ocean kayak drifter going into five years now.. it is as advertised  and makes for an excellent angleyak.. Hey wait a sec! I made a cool name for an "angler kayak"  wow "angleyak"!  Hey you seen the name here first! it's all on data!  Anyway, the special main feature here for me is this, although it isn't recommended , i can honestly stand up in it while out in the pond or slow meandoring river.. don't ask me why I like to stand from time to time though on the internet! lol.. anyway, no doubt this is the most roomiest most stableiest  I am considering the rudder kit but not quite sure if it will make much a difference  for the $.. also, I like minimizing accessories that may get in the way of sliding my yak quickly on and off my truck racks.( paddle clips - rod holders) should break down or be sub mounted (recessed) for convenience of transport. I have yet to find out if the rudder kit for the drifter is easy for breakdown..any care to elaborate , i'd appreciate the info. I'm going to customize flush rod mounts for trolling with my own leash safety strap design this season too.

if it anything like the hobie rudders....or some sort of pulley system, definitely get it, its awesome in rivers, keeps you floating straight and you just move the rudder with the flick of your wrist....definitely gives you more time to fish.

the hobies are certainly #1 in kayaks....the downside is the price but if you can afford it then go with...kayak fishin is more fun that fishing out of a boat....look at the ocean, perception, and wilderness systems kayaks

Agree as to the hobie being expensive, my friend had one and we use to yak together the west branch.. I like my roomier ocean kayak drifter as I mentioned it is mor stable and wider beam making it most comfortable for half day yakin.. also was a few hundred less at the time , i payed under 600 while he spent around 800 for his at the time. But no doubt there are better featured yaks for certain kinds of fishing. I like mine cause it is easy to get in and out without much worry as opposed to those narrower eaier to roll yaks. I understand from experience having to use the dang paddle with one hand while the other hand maneuvers my ultra lights .. diffinitely worth investigating the rudder kit.  thanks

if i were you I'd get a one man canoe..they make one man canoes and they have a lot more space than a kayak and yet are just as or less pricey..plus there a lot more stable and you feel in more control..and you have more space for more equipment including a fishfinder..trust me a one man canoe is better for fishing purposes esecially on lakes!

I used my old Garmin etrex for a long time when I went out on my kayak.
Until one day when I didn't pay enough attention and it ended up underwater half of my trip.
That was it. Lesson learned - always bring a waterproof bag.
