single eggs

ive been going up to the erie tribs for a while now.  Since i was a little boy anyway, and ive come a long way from bringin in steelies with the old pittsburgh putty or powerbait haha...ive tried single natural eggs a couple times this year, mainly because every time ive been up atleast a handful of guys have been hammerin em on them. i tried this past week.....and i think i was doin something wrong...i could never keep the egg on my hook for more than a few casts, it was really hard to even get them on my hook without completely breaking...and i didnt seem to be getting as many hits as a few other guys on either side of me..is this normal? or is there a trick to using them effectively...any input would be appreciated thanks

A lot depends on the type of salmon egg you were using as to the hardness(softness) of it and the type of egg hook you use. Also the type of hook used is important. I use a number 14 thin wire red hook most of the time or a number 14 standard gold single egg hook or something similar. I prefer the thin wired hooks because they slip into the egg easier and usually does not destroy the egg.

If the eggs are too soft and not properly cured they will bleed out almost immediately or on the first cast. Stop at a reputable bait shop in Erie and ask them to show you how to properly "string" an egg. It's really easy once you've seen it done. Careful when you buy eggs that you do not buy the large bags of eggs used for tying sacks as those will not hold up to a hook.

I'm sure you will get a lot more advice as the day goes on. Good luck.

Use the best eggs, Poor Richards', the hard ones.  Chumm 'em mup a little bit...You'll get 'em!   Seriously though, use a smaller hook, I recommend 2x strong hooks, sz. 14 or 16 and bury it into the egg.  Its not just the egg either, rigging plays a big part too...thats a whole other thread!

Also be sure your only hooking the egg once carfully put the tip of the hook into the egg and just kind of slid it on not pushing the tip out of the egg again and use light casts your not gonna be able to chuck it across the stream

I like that you moved from power bait to single eggs. That's quite a steep up. Maybe you can graduate to eggs sacks and then to minnows with trebles as well.

there is a right way to rig them, as others have pointed out.  But in my experience, after 8-10 casts, the gg either falls off or loses its "stuffing" no matter what.  They are somewhat delicate, so you will have to replace them frequently.  Thats the main reason why I started fishing with flies.  I just got tired of always putting new eggs or minnows or whatever on the hook.

Ditto. PR eggs, small egg hooks, no bigger than 12. The small extra barb on egg hook helps hold the egg.

wrangler i like to use size 18 hooks you can bury the hole hook inside the egg and not damage the integrety of the egg at all. The egss should be hard curred , i can cast one 50 times if need be they wont come off.The smaller the better if you ask me. Ive used 18 's with singles for years. I always seem to get bad looks from others when i keep hooking up steelies and they cant. If you go singles try them tiny hooks, works for me.

I had the same problem. Try using a longer type hook, with regular trout bait eggs. Walmart comes to mind, balls of fire , cheese eggs. Put 2 or 3 on that longer hook, the fish don't care. try a mustad 37160 in 14 or 16, loaded with uncle mikes. worked for me

What are Poor Richard's single eggs? Actual steelie eggs? They sem a lot smaller and kind of hard. I don't think I ever caught one on them, though I buy them every year. Maybe if they had them in more colors than the natural off white. I guess if they are steelie eggs than no using them anywhere else in the state right?

I'm pretty sure they are king eggs and I always go with Poor Richards eggs they seem to be the best. The egg usually stays on my hook as long as I need it to. Unless I whip it into some bushes.

I've seen a couple different types of imitation eggs such as Gulp or Power Eggs.  Do these work very well?

If your looking for more than just natural colored curred single eggs then you need to look no further than East End Angler bait shop in harborcreek. He has a variety of different color single eggs. There real eggs in different colors not immitation eggs. He also carries different color sacks.

I dont know. I buy most all of my stuff from local bait shops like bait and hooks and floats and lures and line. I live on the east side. I never bought anything from fishusa. Id like to think im helping out the smaller local shops here stay in buisness. So sad PR East closed down. I did my part but it was not enough.

I was just curious, since these baits would possibly stay on the hook better than natural

B angler I personally havent used any immitation eggs like gulp or power eggs but i have seen others use em and catch fish. I dont know how well they stay on the hook. My guess is that since they milk sent that they would eventually disolve somewhat and fall off , especially if your casting alot.

Some of the shops in Erie sell the Atlantis immatation eggs that work just fine.  They look like a gel silicon ball.  They come in a bunch colors, some work extremely well, but no blue.  I can whip one around on my sage 6wt for hours.  I reccommend the green(1), and the natural pink/peach color.  They are a bit expensive.  Do not let them sit out in direct sunlight for any long period of time, they will turn a milky color.  I believe that is from what ever the oil used to pack them in.

The hardness depends on how long they are curred????? the longer the harder.....
Some eggs are called skiners, just a thin part of skin is curred so if you poke it to deep it will explode into nothing.
Size 18,20,22,hooks will slide just under the skin and toss them gently....
ask about skiners at P R.. and Dotty will tell you!!!!

Use Trout Beads. Don't peg them. Use the loop knot. You're welcome.

once? I've never bought a jar of singles from there that HAVEN'T been absolute garbage. It's actually a joke how bad not only their eggs are, but their prices, their service. Only thing they have going for them is their overall selection of gear. No problem though, I just use all those garbage singles to chum ; )

I dont know if you have to open them up. But your basically just looking for some good color and not many spots, except the one that is always on the egg. You might get a few here and there that may be bad.
