My Piece of Heaven...

Many times I have talked about the hemlock grove behind my house on SGL#54....

I call it my piece of heaven. It's about 400 yards from my home and I have harvested the majority of my deer from those hemlocks, usually before noon on opening day.
I thought I would walk back and take a look since I have not been back there this year. I left the house at 8:30am and arrive at "my spot" about 8:45... I spotted this on the way down..

Here's an idea of what it looks like in there --

At nine o'clock I was greeted with this scene..

Here's the best shot I got... not an AR legal buck.. but a buck in my hemlocks on my first trip there and at 9:00am my favorite time to be there.... I did not stay long after he walked thru.. no sense in smellin up the area.... LOL..

Hey  jlh--Doc always says if you don't like it where you are move to where the deer are. Sounds like an invitation to join him along with directions. Hope there is room for all of us. Are you supplying the coffee Doc?

It's nice to see deer in habitat like that.  I can find a lot of places that look like that, and I can (sometimes) find deer in other places, but rarely see deer in thos kinds of places.

    coffee ?

    Here's a true story...

several years ago I was sick as a dog on opening day of rifle season.. but just had to "get my deer"...

So I set up a blind near my storage shed and ran an 100 foot extension cord over to it... placed a small space heater inside and a  a small seat to sit on and a small table with my MR COFFEE pot ....  as guys from the neighboring camps traveled by they stopped and had a cup of java !!!!!!!!!!

    As for my Hemlock Grove...

It's about half way up a long fairly steep hill, It's sort of is a ridge on the side of a huge hill... small area but alot flater than the hill... deer seem to love to run in there and take a break if "flushed" from the bottom.. Also have seen many bedded in there on hot summer days...

and of course they bed in there in heavy snows and eat the lower branches of the hemlock, but that too is getting harder and harder ..

as the photo shows there is little in that browse line area for them to eat even hemlock branches ...

the one food source that is in there is about 8 HUGE OLD Beechnut trees.... but that would not provide food for too many deer... red squirrels and some grays eat them up pretty fast...

But it does produce deer and out of 40 years of hunting here I have probably killed 30 deer from in there....
