Union City Access

Went over to Union City today with the intention of fishing the reservoir about the dam, but the gate was closed and locked!  It's supposed to be public access. There was a black pickup parked at the gate, guess somebody was fishing. Anybody know why it's locked?

WOW! Thats a PFBC controlled area. Maybe the dam was about to break. Did you get the big down pour like we did south yesterday? Some streets near home looked like rivers with it still raining.

We haven't had any hard driving rains lately.  If the dam is about to break, there should be warning signs on the gate, because some will walk back to the reservoir from the highway.

Thought about this some more. Did the gate have any signs on it? I fish that place a couple times a year and have noticed the road gets rougher and rougher with nothing being done. So maybe they are working on it or its bad enough to close the road.

Are you asking about the municipal reservoir? I was thinking about heading over there myself. Perhaps the water authority would know. I believe that is a joint venture with Union City and PFBC.

The gate has been kept locked all season. Not sure why but I can find out.

From what I gathered, Its all about the maintenance of the area. Fish Comm. won't unlock the gate until the grass is mowed and porta potties are put in place by Union City. But Union City said that is the Fish Comm. Job.  So now what? round and round we go?

    FredT,

Thanks for looking into the access situation.  It's hard to respond to what you learned, other than to say it sounds like a typical bureaucratic SNAFU!    I don't fish the reservoir more than a few times a year, but always enjoy being there, as I'm sure others do too.  Sounds like the agreement between Union City and PFBC needs some modifications that allow for mature management.

    Thank again.

    Guys,
It's all about the Benjamins.  Porta-Potties (and their maintenance) cost $$$$  mowing grass costs $$$ picking up trash and empty bait containers costs $$.  Locking the gates and inconveniencing everybody ... priceless!
Sorry, I just had to go there

The access is a pretty small place.  I've never seen more than a hand full of people there at a time.  There's limited shore fishing and the ramp is not the best.  I've taken a jon boat out on the water and easily covered most fishing spots.  Wouldn't be the first time someone dropped a tear in the woods there, I've never seen a porta potty on the location.  There's not much grass either, mostly woods, and the grass doesn't really need mowed.  I did hear that the road back to the small parking area is in need of repair, and I guess that'd cost some $$$$.  The PFBC says the reservoir is controlled by local gov.

Took this info off the PFBC site:

    126 - Union City Reservoir (Local gov't)
    Union City Reservoir Access

One mile east of Union City on U.S. Route 6.
Hours of operation: sunrise to 9 p.m.
    Un-powered boats only
    Shore fishing
Parking - large lot (10 vehicle or more)
    Beach-type or unpaved ramp
Primary boating - shallow-draft, lightweight fishing boats, canoes and inflatables

I remember there always being porta jon there, which was nice. I agree the grass would not need mowed. I wonder what it would take to get it opened back up?

You're probably right about the portajon. My wife says she remembers one too.  I don't know how much it would cost to keep up the access area, but I do understand that small communities have budget problems.  Keeping the portajon sanitary and the area clean of litter could make a dent in the Union City budget.  But what I don't know outweighs what I do know about the situation.
