No wait you were so close, on that last back cast you broke the wrist. Now we have to start all over again. Step 1: ......

I start to practice my double haul in the yard on June 1 in anticipation of my last week of June Tarpon trip.  I stand on something wobbly -- all the fly line at my feet and fly in hand.  Duncmom calls out direction and distance and I attempt to hit a paper plate on her mark with only two false casts.

By the time the trip rolls around, I am doing pretty well and have confidence in my ability to put a fly in front of a pod of Tarpon at any distance and in any direction.

Of course, the wind is blasting at 15 knots in my yard and there aren't 100 pound fish on the move either.  When the real thing starts to happen, I invariably end up sticking myself some where with the fly, stepping on the line that is on the deck as it shoots, or competely folding the cast into the wind.

However, sometimes, it all works out and the haul goes well, the fly lands where it needs to, and the fish is dumb enough to strike.  That is when I get to screw things up in some other manner.

    Less than 3 weeks now -- I can't wait.

Looks very similar to my three stage, single handed, double roll, spey cast. Mine involves a rock on the fore cast, and a tree on the back cast.

    Gentlemen,
Have you ever seen the little "poof" that accompanies the pop when your fly breaks the sound barrier when you change directions too quickly.  Whip a green drake out there and "Crack The Whip"  I usually wind up with a bare hook.   In all truth I find the double haul cast a bit purist for a brookie stream lined with hemlocks.  LOL

I understand the mechanics behind it but in the few times I've messed around trying it, I've failed. I just can't get all the motions to fall in place correctly.

One day I'll seriously practice it but I don't really have any reason to at this point, short of fishing from the boat, the places I fish don't require it in the least bit.

Never mind the sound, dry a set of lead dumbell eyes to the back of the head or shoulder at the speed of sound. Lead eyes and wind coming at you from the side of your casting arm is very bad news.

Question.  When practicing the double haul in my yard, should I have a leader tied on or leave it off?  I noticed when I practice without the leader, I get more "snapping" of the line because of the tight loop, or is it just that I need to take more time with my backcast?

    Thanks in advance.
