THE MOON

I don't understand this theory at all.I just read today in the october issue of PA game news it has no effect on deer movement. Then why do they talk so highly on the internet about the moon phases. I know guys that won't hunt unless they think the moon is right.Like i talked about before i read that the 2nd full moon after the autmun or fall equinox intense the doe's eyes to send them into estrus just read that last year.Maybe i'm crazy or something but i know i read that somewhere last year. What do you guys thinks about this moon thing?

Found this today on the net.Charles Alsheimer is one of the foremost researcher of deer behavior and wrote a book called hunting whitetails by the moon.He believes that the second full moon after the autumn equinox(rutting moon)is the triggering mechanism for the seeking phase, which lasts six or seven days(three or four days before and after the rutting moon)Which overlaps into the chasing phase and finally the breeding phase.

I say hunt when you can and if the moon helps, great.

I do think a full moon may have an effect. I think when its really bright like that deer move less during the day.

Hunt every day you can regardless of moon, but my journal shows strong correlation between moon position and deer activity (fish for that matter too)  Moon directly above (happens twice a day) 1/2 hour either side, major activity periods, moon on horizons (twice a day) 1/2 hour either side.  When these conditions coencide with dusk or dawn the best days are to be had.  Someone else on here also mentioned moving barometer, also very true in my experience.

Casio sells a watch which gives you the Major and minors for each day, I love mine, and my records show that it works fairly often.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

was thinking about starting a log even though its a little late for this year and marking how the weather moon barometer is, along with how i did to see how all these things you read about in magazines correlate with what i see in the woods. does neone do this and has it helped them/change the way they hunt?

I thought about building a computer program to do this sort of thing. Maybe i will over the winter. My original thought was pretty simplistic. With my knowledge of web programming today i could pull off something pretty radical. I think i would like to give everyone the possibility to keep their own journal with the ability to see combined statistics. If I could obtain the sponsors it could be free. Otherwise id need to charge a fee but it would be worth it.

My hunting notes have shown that  I see the most movement of bucks from the 3rd of November to the 8th of November pretty consistantly year to year, regardless of the moon phase.  A dark moon can add to the daylight activity and a full moon can suppress daylight activity but I have found temperatuire has more to do with it then anything.

The PGC embryo studies cleary show that peak breeding in Pa. is centered on the 15th of November every year but the full moon can be up to two weeks different every year.  I don't give it much weight myself.

moon, schmoon! haha, jk. i beleive there is something to it, my sister has a dog thats scared to death of the moon, while my little beagle pays no attention, and those facts alone tell me something goes on with animals and the moon.  maybe it is on a per animal, or per speicies basis, but i believe something happens, what it is, im not sure.  I hunt the weather. Front coming, deer move, and im there for sure.  Good rule of thumb is, nov 1- end of bow, good hunting, deer moving, all horned up.

The moon phases do affect both game movement and fish activity in normal weather conditions. Storm fronts, etc alter this pre-determined activity. The moon phase has less to do with the actual rutting activity than time of year than weather. Ideal game movement today is from 12:54 to 2:54. I am heading back out then so will probably have a truck load when I get back.

Snow, cold, wind and the rut is on guys, I was out most of the day in four different locations and saw five bucks, four of them for the first time. Three singles went by me at 10-15 yards on the ground like I wasn't even there and fourth was already tending a doe. The fifth didn't appear to be interested but was a spike. I now have seen 15 bucks close and not one legal, much less a shooter. Since Doc posts info from the PGC claiming half the bucks are 2-1/2 year olds I must be due for a whole herd of wallhangers to come by. Come on Doc, open up your barn door and let a couple out. I even had a small spike on 2F try to run me over this morning.
