Fishing Log

Anyone keep one?  I just picked up a small blank journal for this purpose, and I plan to log each trip I make, to eventually use as a reference.  This time next year, I can look back at my log and see how I did at what locations using what flies.

My question, for those of you that keep one, is what sort of information do you include?  For now, I've got date, body of water, section of stream (if applicable), time, temperature (air), weather conditions (sunny, rainy, windy, etc.), water conditions (level, color, clarity, flow), notable hatches, fish caught, flies caught on, flies tried, and finally, any other notes, fishing related or otherwise.  This could include anything froma note about an interesting animal I saw, to people I met, to strange behaviors among the fish.

Is there anything else you guys can think of?  I was also considering including moon phase.

Well the journal will usually stay in the safety of the car or backpack (for day hikes, left on shore, usually).  If I DO end up putting it in the vest, it'll go in a ziplock bag, like the cell phone, car keys, and camera (if I bring it).

I used to keep a spreadsheet with general information(location, water temp, fish caught, fish fished for and number of fish and bait or lure caught on) it was too much.  A good journal is something i need to get back into.  It would help pattern fish over the years.

Moon phase would be a good addition to your log.  The fish are directly influenced by the variations in the moon cycle.  This way when you look back you can see the evidence of it in your fishing patterns.  My father and I kept a log for one season with trout.  We decided we just enjoyed going fishing and not logging it.  Good luck with it.

cold, you put way more than i put in my log, but if you have the time i'm sure it's worth the knowledge for later on. i also put who i fished with and also what they used.
if i have a great day with a couple of flies, i'll indicated the actual pattern i used for future ref. ~dt

Yeah I'm doing it more because its fun than because I feel a need to.  I've fished for ages and learned many things on my own without taking notes, but I'm just the kind of person that likes to come home at the end of the day and sit down with a good cup of tea and read (or in this case write)...that is...when I'm not tying, and theres no football on.  Also, theres just something I find really cool about the idea of having, a year from now, a journal full of accounts of last years' fishing, just to see how the entries change.  Hopefully from "No fish caught." to "Lost count of fish landed".

I kept a log. I had a lot of the same things you have but the way I did it was I had a voice recorder and would record everything then on the days that the weather was bad or just did not get out and fish I would put it on paper and then put it in my truck.

Date and number of fish caught. Very simple. Lets me know how often I went fishing and caught fish.
