fiberglass, South Bend, about 1956-58,a pretty good rod for the time featured linear glass strands.  Only deficiency was too few guides.  And the reel seat had a tendency to lock down pretty tight.  Neat old rod, don't see them in good condition.  Rods will chip if hit by anything (like split shot) amd then break at the chip.  If it's in good shape it would be fun to fish.  Does it have a weight des. and how long? Looks like about 7 foot.  Reel looks like a Pfleuger Medalist. (or a copy) maybe a S/B.

indsguiz, you know your rods! Thank you very much. Like I said it was my grandfathers and he caught native brook trout on it all of his life.

That was my starter rod, the one that I practiced with on the lawn. One year of using it I kind of forgot about it until my brother took an interest in fly fishing.

I think it's kind of cursed really.. I've never caught a trout on it even on good days. Though I think it doesn't have much of a backbone for hooking.

Yeah it's in really good condition. Again, because its cursed LOL. I've been everywhere with this thing and nothing will happen to it. Hiking in the mountains I accidently smashed the eye lid into side of this hill and nothing! This thing has taken quite a beating and not even a scratch.

Also, it is a 7 foot. Not much detail on the weigh or anything else on it. I've been thinking of just getting a new reel for it, though it's hard to find one that fits.

If indsguiz is correct on the year I believe it will have a letter for the weight instead of a number. It might be on the end of the butt cap.

Nope, I can't find it. After holding it for awhile I can tell I've been missing out... Graphite is all right and most durable, but Split Cane, Bamboo, and Fiber Glass you bond with . I can't believe I left this rod for a 100 dollar 7 1/2 5 weight. What was I thinking?

    Yep

These were 6/7 weights. Most were marked with DHD for fly line. Does it have 4 guides? I rebuilt a few of these and others like it. I put on the correct number of guides and it would throw a 7wt line really nice. Slow but smooth.
All rods will break if they get a chip in them from a flying weight. Try that with a GLX and you got some extra peices. Fiberglass, by nature, will take more of a beating than say a high modulus carbon rod.
