Sucker Fishing

Does anyone still engage in sucker fishing?  I can remember when my moms husband used to take me sucker fishing.  We used to take a five gallon bucket filled with Y sticks, bait, and terminal tackle, and plop ourselves down at the mouth of a creek.  After we baited up (usually with red worms) and cast in we would attach 4 inch sticks, one end carved to a point with a slit in it the middle (we called them policemens) and would wait for the policeman to head towards the water.  When it did...PULL.. fish on...  Did I mention we used to sit on the buckets?  My mother used to enjoy sucker roe.  She would wash them real good, egg wash, roll in flour, and in the pan they went.  A few minutes later, Wa La...  Not for me, but some may enjoy.  I was just wondering if there are as many sucker fisherman out there today as there once used to be.

They do have a sweet flesh to them. best bet because they are so darn boney is to get what meat you can from them and shred it up mix with egg and insant mash potato flaks make paties and fry them up. they arenot to bad table fair at all. I do not mess with them myself any more as i get way more than enough fishfor the freezer between walleyes, crappie and blue each year..

I've heard they can be cooked down and canned.  I don't have the recipe, but I'm told the bones cook down to nothing.  They can later be made into a fish cake (like a salmon cake) and are pretty good table fare.

There was a recipe for pickled suckers in a WCO report a year or two ago.  Anyone still have it?  Similar to canning, pickling will help with the bones.

    Egg,

Everytime you hold a fish you look like your about to go for a swim, or drop it and give it a randy savage elbow

Well luckly it never got on my skin just the waders(they are retired). I had zero clue what was happing at the time as the fish weighed a full 30 lbs and I was just trying to hold up its heavy tocass. Well my camera man ( using my camera)was taking forever to get the pic. I know why now as he was enjoying watching me getting a spunked on..Not sure who edited the orignal pic to make everything look so dark but the fish was more green then black when I landed it.

I like going after them when the water is high. Good old worm on bottom and a brew in hand with a friend and have a good old time. Grind them and make patties.

      egg sac,

a fish turns darker the longer it is out of the water. Next time you catch a sun fish hold it out of the water & watch it change right before your eyes. Not sure trout change that fast though. I'm sure you already knew that though. Just giving a possibility.

Put on a sharp 4/0 hook unbaited with a couple splitshot 12 inches above the hook.  Find a slow hole with suckers visible, cast past the fish and reel in slowly until the splitshot is on the sucker's back and SET that baby.
