Drop Shotting

anyone drop shot around here?

i bought a purpose built drop shot rod a couple weeks ago and have really started getting into fishing this way. i always used to think it was BS before but i find myself headed for deep water drop off's before downed trees anymore. ive fished a drop shot before but with a heavier rod that made it difficult. the end result was not the best.

right now the setup is a 6'8" shimano crucial with a diawa sol 2500 and 6# p-line evo. my shot is placed about 15-18 inches from the hook. ive been using roboworms almost exclusivly because they seem to float almost at a perfect 90 degree angle to the line so they sorta stick straight out. usually just cast out and let out slack so it can sink straight down, reel up the slack and tap the butt of the rod lightly while reeling in the minor slack the results.

if anyone has any pointers or tips on shotting i would like to know. seems this style of fishing is the ticket for the heavy pressure lakes with clear water around here. one thing i did start doing is buying regular spilt shots and crushing a swivel in them as opposed to buying those high dollar drop shot weights.

thanks for any info in advance.

no doubt its not only for deep and clear. but its nice if your close to a drop off or some other structure for that matter where bass are suspended at a certain hieght.

I fished the ohio tonight and couldn't get a bite.  We did ok on the beaver river on saturday.  I kept my eye's on my electronics and drop shotted most of the night.  I found high suspending fish over deeper water just off shore and some bottom dwellers but no takers.  I won't give up though.

Just about any structure is fine.  Deep and shallow work just as well.  We use them from shore too.

If you want a big thrill, use them on lillipads as they come out.  Work laying on lilly pad, and them give it a small tug to pull the weight off the pad and the bait will slowly drift into the water...bass eat'em up.

I would, however, say we have better luck with them based on relational elements under and on the water.  Next to downed tree, next to the grass edge, from lillipads, right next to dropoffs, etc...I have even done this with heavy terrain like rocks under tressels.

As for bait, as said, it's not just for worms.  We have used grubs, worms, crays, even curly tailed 'unnaturals' work.

Sound doesn't matter too much,a s the movement is the trigger, but you can use rattles if really wanted.  I didn't and wouldn't, but you could try during those slower days.

I use the palomar also.  If the hook facing the down, run the tag end down through the eye.  That will move the knot to the inside making the hook point up.

I haven't had any problems losing fish on the dropshot.  Make sure your hook is big enough for the bait that you're using.  The smallest I use is a #4 Gammie DS hook.  Most of the time I'm using a 1 or 1/0 DS hook.

im using a #1 gamakatsu drop shot hook. i havent lost a fish to date with them. matter of fact i loose more fish with T rigged senkos then when i shot. matter of fact every time i hook a bass drop shotting its always dead center top of the mouth or near the right corner, wierd. btw i started using a palomer knot again and pulling the tag through and my hook stands up like a stiffie now! good advice, thanks.

speaking of shotting thats about all i did this weekend. being that i have no boat i hit lovely keystone state park. this place has always been a huge dump to me. i swore i would never go back there in my life after the last outing. this time i shotted the weedlines and walked away with 4 bucketmouths in the 16-17 inch range and one pushing 20 as well as a ton of dinks. this may not be the miracle way to catch fish but its been netting be more fish and larger fish from lakes that typically recieve tons of pressure.

my guess is these tards lobbing a constant barrage of bobbers an egg sinkers into the water like cannonfire equal to any major civil war battle drives them down deep and keeps them in suspension. who knows, all i know is its been working for me.
