Has anyone been to the streams yet to see if the run has begun? I don't wanna make a 2 1/2 hr drive if its not worth it yet.

This really depends on your definition of "Worth It". How many hook ups will make you happy?

But

Judging by couple other threads the streams are blown out right now, don't waste your gas just yet.

streams blown as of late last night but dropped quickly.  kinda figured they would this early in the season and guages showing the same thing.  webcam showed one or 2 guys at the campground fishing and creek wasn't deep at all.  buddy txted me at 7 this morning and said 20 mile walkable but really dirty.  overcast here right now but no more rain in forecast.  gonna give elk a shot tomorrow but have a feeling it's going to be back to low and clear.  it's great being pumped, but this was only the first rain and the creeks dropped quickly afterward.  usually takes elk 2 days to become fishable, need alot more to fill the streams and saturate the ground around them.  be patient.  the season is here.  only a matter of time.

I made the two hour trip. My main reason was to walk the creeks and see how they have changed. Fished 7 mile at daybreak and did really well the first 45 minutes while I had an entire run to myself. 4 mile had fish but plenty of fisherman. Walked 12 mile and saw some fish scattered throughout. 16 had fish and a lot of fishermen from top to bottom. 20 mile had some right by the lake (lower portion). Actually walked 20 mile from the tomato patch to the posted water and didn't see any fish. Believe it or not, the water was not high at all and was getting lower and clearer by the hour. I was only on the east side today and can say fish came in....but really didn't push up further than the mouths (half mile or so up).

I will be heading to elk and walnut tomorrow as I am afraid the east side will be painfully low and clear.

It was the first rain of the year and fish came in. However, the ground has to be saturated more for the creeks to hold water this time of the year.

That is my report on the east side. Hope to see some of you guys on the west side tomorrow. Good luck to all.

no rain predicted till sometime next week will mean low and clear. West side tribs will be low and clear by noon Monday. Better fishing conditions will be in October. A friend texted  SR is the place to be next week

I made the 3 hour drive. It was what I expected...some fish and alot of fishermen. Fished Elk Access in brown water, but had some fights. I got my fix for now. Like stated before...first substantial rain so the creeks dropped fast. It was worth the drive for me, but not sure what you're looking for.

I live an 1 1/2 away, and without reading a report, or weather forecast I know it's not "worth it" to me. Unless I really wanted to go Steelhead fishing. Then it would be totally worth it.

This thread is annoying.  Yinz guys are tiptoeing around it.  John, when u ask that question it gets on people's nerves.  Yes, there are fish in the stream.  Not a ton, but enough.  Go get em!

Re: Any word yet 2013/09/23 23:29:18 (permalink)
What everybody's trying to say is 'worth it' is subjective.

I drove 2 hours to fish for steelhead today. Walnut was very crowded for this early in the season on a weekday, but there were good numbers of fish around for September 23rd. If 'worth it' to you means the numbers of fish and stream conditions you'll generally find in early to mid-November, then no, it's not worth it yet.

If you want to test your skills in low, clear conditions with most fish surrounded by fishermen on a beautiful, early fall day then yes, it is very worth it.

I prefer to fish in relative solitude with faster flows and more fish, but it was worth every second of the 2 hour drive up, worth every penny of gas and bait and worth every second on the stream to catch a handful of the dumb ones I managed to fool today.

I specifically target the dumb ones. It helps the gene pool by eliminating the dumb ones from future generations of fish. It seems my work is almost done now as I have been catching fewer and fewer fish.  You're welcome, no trouble at all.

Here is what is happening.

There are absolutely fish in the creeks. Trout Run is packed with them, Walnut has good numbers at the mouth. Can't speak much to the other creeks. We had a good dump of rain that brought the creek levels up and the fish in--but the levels are back down again with no rain in sight for the next week. I live a mile from the creek and that is the info that I use to see if it is worth it. Keep an eye on the gauge and the weather and read the reports. As I said, I live a mile from the creek, so for me it is worth it to fish. I do not even need gas money. But if you want consistent steelhead weather and water I would wait especially if this is your only chance of coming up in the season. 6 hours of driving, probably not. A couple of hours or a day trip--probably.

If you live more than one cup of coffee away, and it has to be "worth it" ( Whatever that means ) for you to make the drive. Don't bother even reading the  fishing or weather reports, until at least the 3rd week of October.

how  is anyone s'posed to know what's "worth it" to some stranger ?

maybe he should share with us what makes it "worth it" to HIM

is "worth it" to him with  14 fish in the Stop Sign hole, 40 fish, or 400??

1: Do you really enjoy standing in a stream watching a bobbin?
2: Do you enjoy lots of company while doing so?
3: How many fish caught, fought, seen, or hooked are required per trip?
4: How annoying are your wife, and or kids?
5: How much coffee does you thermos hold?
6: Do you enjoy long drives in the dark?
7: Can you adapt to changing condition?
8: Do you really enjoy ( crave ) the food at the Avonia, Freeport, or Theresa's?
9: Can you afford the Edward John, and is Perchin an acceptable alterative, just in case?
10: Are you easily satisfied, or difficult to please?

These are the questions we need answered, to properly assess the "worthitness" of your proposed trip.

How annoying are your wife and kids. Haha thats a good one, i love my family but i can relate. For me if i can catch a single fish and enjoy the nice early season weather and spend some time with my buds then it is definately worth the 2 hour drive. youll find me shacked up at the el patio throwin back cold ones come days end. You never really know how good its gonna be unless you go. A day after rain preferably.

I don't know if it's really going to be "worth it" for a while. Looks like there is no significant rain in the Erie forecast for the next 2 weeks. Maybe some good rain around October 6th.
