We shall see how my sophomore year pans out on the Great Lake with the Daisy Mae. With all that ice cover out there I have a feeling its going to be a struggle for everyone.
I only hope the ice flows out quickly and the snow melts slowly on the Mighty Hudson for this years striper run..

If last seasons 'issues' were in fact a result of heavy ice  this year is indeed questionable.
Some hope, however, may be in order as other lakes commonly ice over and still maintain healthy fish numbers.
Likely many factors  involved with ice being but one.
One thing I never understood was why juvenile Kings seemed to be out there according to reports and the large adults seemed more heavily affected. Didn't see an abundance of either in the river system. All those 'jacks' are this years river fish--I hope.
Good luck on the river this Spring Tuna.

I'm curious as to what fishmachine has experienced on his venture on the SR in these conditions.Meanwhile it's a balmy 6 degrees and sunny here, but snow/ice/rain predicted Sat & Sun with a high of 40!!!! then back to freezing on Monday. The 10 day is still below temps........BLAH!
Rich the in shore trolling on the lake in April early May for Browns can be good from what I remember.

Stay warm Jack.
I don't think the boat would make it to the GL until late June . There is just to much local fishing to do until the summer shuts us down round here

Not sure if I was hallucinating, dreaming or, plain forgot I was reading AccuWeather.  But, I'm seeing O.A.T.s beginning to moderate first week of March.  30s to 40s with some 50s mixed in by mid March.  Happy days are here again.............................

On the 10 day they have 33 on March 1 and it also predicts 5-8 inches of snow, but since we will be in March after that it should start warming up.......RIGHT?

Get me all excited over moderating temperatures starting next month than turn around and drop a WINTER STORM WARNING on me.

4 to 7" of snow for my area of Penn's Woods beginning 0600 Sat. morning.  I know this snow amount is nothing compared to what my neighbors north and northwest have gotten but, DAG-NAB-IT anyway.

Well I figured I'd post here to be a little less conspicuous.  We fished upper river today.  Ellis had no cars and no footprints.  We were gonna walk it down but a guide boat got ahead of us and we decided that things would probably become a nuisance.  So we went down to Pineville shelf ice was making its way off the bank.  We tried tucking in under the bridge but between the wind, the snow, and the shelf ice- it was a no go (only 1 other car in the parking lot).  Limited trails down there so obviously most fisherman are up top.  We didn't hit Trestles as that's on the docket for tomorrow.  Altmar had no cars on the none fly fishing side.  We worked our way down to the School.  Holy people had to be about 10 guys down there (one guide boat was parked in the middle of one of the holes) so we went back to the truck.  All in all we went 3 for 5 between my buddy and I (2 males and 1 female).  The weather wasn't too bad when the sun was out but conditions definitely worsened throughout the day in my opinion.  Probably fished from 11 to 330.

Last one and note fish was not out of the water long.  We make sure that they are released promptly.  I certainly wouldn't want to hurt these fish.

Very nice and well done. Now I'm glad I'm going Sunday. They're decent looking fish, not blackish and beat up. Thanks for the shot of adrenaline.
Glad you hooked up.

Yeah we were happy to get some action. We were white knuckling it up last night. It got nasty around oneida. I will let you guys know how tomorrow goes. I think we are gonna do some hiking tomorrow. Fyi snow pack is loose and definitely balls deep. we had to do some trail blazing down at pineville. We went down the embankment and assumed the fish gods would reward us since they didn't we packed it in. Wind burn was starting to hurt anyway.

Yep give me the faintest inkling.  21 degrees and a little windy, but a welcome change. Looks like it will break next week. We just got done beating the snot out of the loader pushing back the banks. I even used the 3 point blower to widen thing up a bit.

Re:Weather thread 2015/02/21 16:58:37 (permalink)
Well first off it was not necessarily warmer today. Winds were steady and fishing pressure was reasonable high. Snow was on the menu for most of the day. Altmar had approximately 10 cars in the north lot. Ellis had 3. The wire parking area was just about full. Trestles south had 5 and there were even some vehicles down at pineville. We had a difficult time today only two hook ups with one being landed. Hopefully a few hours in the am tomorrow pays off.

There were about 4 guide boats on the water and it seemed everywhere we turned there was one or even two coming down toward us.

Hey PA, we fished between the altmar bridge and the school mostly.  We didn't hit the lower fly stretch as I sold off my fly gear a few years back and have turned to the dark side (pinning).  Kidding, I did realize rather quickly how bad of a caster I truly was with the fly rod...   I never had a problem with a 2 or 4 weight fishing for stockies but I looked like an idiot trying to swing a 8 or 10 weight.  I've just been bottom bouncing with a noodle rod.

Thanks for the reply machine, were there any people on the LFZ that you noticed? What have you been using for bait/lure and also did you see other anglers having any luck?
Well it has been snowing here in SE penna. since noon and it is starting to accumulate,it might turn to all rain by daybreak and then end soon after. It seems this is a every weekend thing and it is getting a bit old.

Bet I'll have lots of open area Monday morning!   Slow, but success is good! Thanks for the further report fm. Hope you enjoyed your trip.  I'm strictly a fly flopper, but I'll be basically doing the same thing as you were.   After plowing and shoveling I'll get to leave tomorrow and hopefully, make it mid-afternoon. Shoehorn in somewhere...

We were using brownie eggs and chartreuse was the color of choice. If I recall correctly the fly zone was pretty busy today. We came across one guy who said he hooked up on 5 landed 2 and that the spot he wanted to fish was extremely productive today. We only watched two other guys hook up today. the one guy hooked two back to back in the afternoon but things quieted down after that. Sounds like guides had a hard time yesterday and today so I don't feel too bad.

Yeah your Monday may look like our friday. Having scouted the altmar area a little bit now...I would love to have a couple of days during the week. The guys at all seasons said some days during the week especially when it's miserable- they would be surprised if you saw 10 to 15 guys all day. Although I feel that was slightly inaccurate, today versus yesterday was significantly different fishing pressure wise.

Weather has moderated for the weekend, but all reports say unless you have a snowmobile or the constitution of a Greek god you should stay home.

Forgot to mention that this will probably be one of the snowiest February's in history and probably the record coldest as we at right around 10 degrees as the average. If it does not go above freezing today it could be the only month in history (since they started keeping track ) that the temperature did not go above freezing for an entire month. One more brutal day this week...............

Late start today and quite honestly not enough will and determination to fight the crowds. Probably 15 cars at the altmar north lot. 8 cars at the sportsmans hole. 3 cars at Ellis and it was full at the wire. Pineville had a few cars as well.

Yup... Nicest day of the winter and a little bit of success chattered about on the internet and poof*** the parking lots fill up . machine, this is not directed towards you at all. Great job on gutting it out and having some success!!!

Clint , the warmest I saw today was under 30. I think we've got a record breaker... Either way its been not even a handful of days above freezing since Jan 1st. Charlie, I will ring ya some time before Wednesday. Dress warm though as the temps are plummeting!!!

We got to 29 today ad it felt good. The shifting cable keeps popping of dads truck and it seems the fix is a new cable or welding and modifying the peg it clips on. I think the mechanic  is getting this one,  a few hundred dollars is well worth not being on my back for hours and rust and dirt falling in myy eyes.

Guess thats a big reason the pressure has increased- Last Sunday AM was -15 and today is 29 .   44 degree upgrade brings out the fishermen.

Yeah I think the pressure was bound to happen.  Especially when everyone is concentrating up top.  Technically the reports weren't that positive Friday or Saturday.  Ran into a guide at the one bar on Saturday night and he said things were slow overall.  Definitely think next year I will go later when more of the river is fishable as well as other areas.  Anyhow good luck to all no matter where you are at whether its on the ice or in the river.
