43 degrees and standing by for heavy rain with thunderstorms in my little piece of Penn's Woods. Don't know where it's headed when it leaves here but somebody is gonna get wet. Maybe pump up the criks and send them fish up the tribs? Be some fresh smoked trout for Christmas feast.

The last two days have been a rain snow mix, we lost alot of snow last night. I am liking the metal roof alot. Sent three cows out yesterday to the butcher. Most places are skimmed with ice , but the butcher weather does not look good for the 4 inches I like to go out.

Impossible ( for me) to post pictures from this phone anymore.
Rain washed our local higher elevation ice away.
Temps are going back in the right direction tonight. No worries, just gonna have to put some rubber on the road Friday to the adks.
Great start to winter IMO !!!

Ps. We were on 5 " yesterday, locally here Clint

Only one day for single digits here then highs in the mid 30s all week, lows in the high 20s. Not good ice making. It will be colder up north where I go for sure, but not holding my breath..........

You got me, Clint. Did something happen at 9 Mile Point?  "Fissile material  can have it's atoms split, like Uranium 238. Fissile  can also mean something that is cleavable, splittable, which for ice sounds a little dicey. Careful out there.

Hey Charlie-probing your salt knowledge - lol
Watching the evening weather guy bout 3 weeks back- he was along the Coast down around Stratford or Stamford Ct with water and a short wood dock in the background.
Water may well have been a small bay but couldn't see land across it.
Two guys on the dock casting what appeared small spinners with medium rods.
One caught a light colored fish around 12 to 16 inches  and appeared to keep it in a cooler.
Thought it was late for small Blues and too small a fish to keep for a Striper.
Ling Cod ???
Harbor Blue??

Trev, that giant class of small schoolies is still kicking around, so that would be first guess. Other than that, harbor pollock. I've caught them on spinners off docks up and down the coast.  Blues are  farther south, now.  Even seem to be heading out of South Jersey.  I haven't gone since Oct. and am kicking myself for missing what turned out to be a good run on the NJ shore in Nov.
I'll be hitting the West Wall and the Narrow River in  April again.  Have a Merry Christmas and New Year, and I hope you get some fishing in somewhere.

Trev, I'm not sure, but they like colder water. Big stripers like them, and early on you can find the pollock inshore, same for fall. I'm assuming you could still find them around.
Here's an article from Maine.

So who else hates the new fishing license system ? I am heading out to the ice and figured I better make sure I got all my license. Low and behold, my fishing expired on 12/11. So have to turn around and head to a store. The kicker is my free marine permit expires on 4-21-17 and I can't renew that until 4-22-17.
It drives me crazy they did away with the all in 1 sportsman tags.

Ah the weather. . It never got below freezing last night and I hope my perch spot is safe to walk on. If not , plan B to some mixed bag of bass, pickerel and a luck of a trout .

Got out on one of my favorite local lakes.
Not a sole been on the clear black ice fishing yet this season. The perch grounds were locked . I spudded my way to 24 fow with 4 " uniform ice.. Coulda fished there but wanted the full view of the lake as it's split.
Decided to try the second half for gills and crappie.. . Put 3 traps out and they produced .. The jigging was a struggle.
Glad to be out and fishing again !!!

This weather today didn't effect the ice at all.. Rain may but there is plenty of hardwater fishing to be found now .
Happy Christmas !!!

Well the wind and rain kept me off the ice today . It may hurt a little but we are locked solid so once the night time Temps drop it will tighten up. Won't be able to get back to fishing until Monday and undecided if I head north or stick to my local and try to pillage all the pannies I can before everyone realizes there are fish to be had .
Did buy myself a Christmas present. . A 4 gig portable cheap mp--3 player for $25.00 I had a very expensive I-pod . Never again , it's a heartbreak to send an expensive electronic device through the washing machine, washer won.
So now it cheap and effective. . Didn't take me long to max out 4 gigs of mp-3 and it actually plays, sounds good..

Hope your Christmas eve is going well and Santa brings everyone Joy

The Temps got down to 13 degrees last night and tighten up my yard so I took a chance and drove to a small local lake that holds a mixed bag of everything including trout. It was incredible, salmon river zoo like !! Cars & trucks parked everywhere with about 20 shanties on the lake . Musta been 100 plus holes and traps set up out there !!
I walked to waters edge and observed for about 10 mins before getting back in my car and driving home .. Gesh, everyone must have been trying their new Christmas toys out ..
Ah well, got some house work done and everyone will be back to work tomorrow.
Not sure if this rain, again , will kill things local for the week but I will scout some more spots tomorrow. If things turn to a bust I might just walk in that river before 2017 yet ..

Well , me , son & granddaughter found 7" ice today locally. Looks like I might stick around here for awhile longer .
While it was 43 degrees up in the hills , it was brutally windy and without the shanties & heater , we got chilled .

Sorry for the boring posts and no idea how to put pictures up from my phone

Yinz gettin much snow mupp yinz way. So far we are holding our own with 5-ish or so. Weather dude says snow should taper off this afternoon with showers to be expected tomorrow afternoon, followed by a warm up with rain for Mon. and Tues.

BTDT, yesterday was a swing and a miss in the mid Hudson region.  Snow quickly changed over to rain and so far today nothing but a few scattered flurries.

Re:Weather thread 2016/12/30 18:34:26 (permalink)
Just returned from the adks and it fell pretty steady and heavy from 8 am until 8 pm yesterday .
Total fall was 8" there about . It was fluffy stuff and access today on the lake we had 5-6" to deal with. It was fun .
now that I'm below the blue line ( adks) , I got about 4" wet stuff to plow tomorrow before it freezes, I see it's already packed down.

My ice adventure was nothing short of a blast with a good friend, who is heading to fish Champlain area tomorrow.
It was his first of the season and my 6th or so. 2 lakes we fished had 10" & 8" ice respectively. I would have drove my truck on that . Snowmobile riders , x country skiers, hikers, snowshoeing and 1 small group fishing were all we seen in 2 days besides beautiful mountains in the winter. Fish were caught and lost .
A regroup for me tomorrow then start the 2017 season .

Happy new years folks and hope your 2016 ends on a high note

Temps dropped overnight nicely. Local lakes locked and ready again.
Today is a plow, chores and re rig - group my gear day .

And so it's about to happen :
First time I have not wet a line in the salmon river since 1980.
over the last 3 years much has changed for me on that fishery. Haven't caught ( aside from a foul ) a salmon in the trib in 2 years . Didn't fish the spring steel at all last year .
Is it a sign I'm getting old , tired or just burnt out ?
I'm leaning towards tired and lazy with a touch of burned-out.
Seems I still find some gumption to drag a sled around through snow, ice and cold .

Good luck to all salmon river fishusa' ers
