Yea that makes sense then.. I don't know face cords only shoot tons of wood , lol
Getting logs is tough around here, they don't (my mill) even mess to much with firewood anymore.. When they do they have a tri axle and pup trailer so somewhere around 10 cord.. Other suppliers are booked and it's a lot of mixed stuff.. I was and able to select cut red oak from work as they cleared land, it's just lots of extra work and time, cant say I'm lazy though as we are still a year ahead with about 15 cords, just ask Rob I burn pellets, lol..

Need to find my glasses now and finish tying up these flies , yes that I have been lazy at, lol..

Yes face cords... All the dummies up here refer to face cords as cords mostly.. And yes 500 is a heck of a deal delivered:) the no space load usually is + or - a few face cords fichy. I picked up about 8-10 face of very thick/nice cherry slab wood for 100 bucks last spring from a local sawyer. On the other hand plenty of people selling split wood that isn't even seasoned for up to 75 a face... Tuna hauling that distance a pick up load at a time sure is a lot of work.

Andy, I think the face cord method is generated by second homes that have that  approx. 1/3 cord (usually 16" length)    load delivered to take the chill off on the weekends. I use to supply wood to second homes and condos in Vt. . I've never seen  log loads counted that way, so  it seems strange to me. 128 cu. ft. is a hard and fast number; 4x8 x any length can vary all over the place.  I pay 550 for 6 cord loads. A lot of work by any counting method. I'll feed the oil burner off road this winter for very little more than wood.

No worries here db, I was confused as I never refer or dealt with face cords.. We would cut about 20 (actual)cords a year with a year ahead stocked up.. At first I would cut (trees down) then split and stack 2 full truck loads every day after work at work and my days off as well until we hit around that 20 cord mark for the year.. Then it started to take it's toll on me with the splitting by hand so we would just chunk them then load in the truck and pile up at home for splitting later.. Obviously I would select cut and pick only red oak as it was easy to split, stayed away from the maple as it was usually gnarly.. Finally I made Rob buy a splitter :) because it was killing my elbow swing a maul and putting a dent in being able to fly fish, hence the reason I bought the 2 handed spey rod..
We, he is good for this upcoming winter with mostly last years stock and about 25 % from that massive red oak that fell by my house..

I have about 3+ cord here for my little cook stove that I run in the man cave just to keep the chill off and dry out ice fishing/hunting gear..
Geesh all this talk of heating and cold weather has me thinking , Where's the ice ? LOL

Think I'm going to relax indoors while doing some sheetrock work , yea work ugh, that I have been slacking on.. At least the beer will be cold and the temperature controlled  :)

Stew Leonards is a GREAT place to shop.
Actually told Wifey that I'm gonna be stopping there (we are regulars up on Rt 15))on my way up to SR for the rest of the season instead of the store in Pulaski where half the meats and produce on the shelves is out of, or a day away from, its end date.
Have got to my place and had to throw smelly meat and fruit out a day after going there. Even with only a couple of being a part time resident months left- ENOUGH.

ya know, when you find a good butcher/ meat market shop it's tough to compare anything else..
Veggies ,I have always had good things to say about the local stands along the highways and back roads in Oswego county and we stop every week. Maybe I'm missing something but there seems to be a lack of fruits up there though..
We got a great farm stand by my house that keeps us in local supply of fruits & veggies also, my garden (my fault) went to pot so it's easy for me to kick down a 20 spot and walk away with grocery bags :) ..

WAY to HOT outside to do any more woodwork to finish out trim for sheetrock .. Time to chill

Tuna and fichy, I'm thinking face cords are more commonly used due to pick up truck loads at a time. Fichy you are spot on as it is a 4*8*1.33333 stack. I have been averaging 24 face cords a season. Most anyone who sells up this way refers to face cords. Fichy your 550 for 6 cords is pretty much in line with 500 for 18-21 face cord load. People must be dumb up here for using face cord as a standard... Lol... :)

Hey, who ya callin' dumb.............          It's just a regional thing like, pop is soda in Buffalo.  Honestly I would say most folks up here , wood burners or not use the word cord for face cord. I know what a true cord is but if anyone asks how much I burn it's in face cords.  It's just how we were brought up.  My grandfather sometimes called a face cord a Rick of wood. Charlie is right though probably originated from folks wanting a smaller amount to just keep the chill off.

I think it also arises from the 16-18" chunk that most wood stoves accommodate.  Most folks don;t have the power tools for reducing the length.

Hahh!!! 2 full cords in a day is a bit of work there charlie. Amen to you. I have about 15-20 face that's been drying for quite some time. Today I'll start bringing it in as the weather change is inevitable at this time of year. Still have 5-8 face ready to be brought to the pile in the woods. I may have a winters worth of wood at once for the first time since I started burning. Plan on having overage which will be a first for me. I hate scavaging for wood mid-late season!

Been there hitting up my parents who always have a ton or the dreaded buy for the local convenient store which adds up quickly for 6 logs in a bag. now we supplement with the pellet store no wood stove for us. Much more wife friendly.

Very hot and sticky!!! I just did a face cord load from 2 maples both in the 30-45 year old range. Its darn good wood. Gonna take the bigger limbs of these and cut them in to four footers and set them up for ****ake mushroom growth!!! Yesterday I hand cut an approximate 50*100 area of tall hay. Seems like real good stuff. Local Agway sells for 7 bucks a bale. I probably have about 15 bales worth... Yes jack very hot!!! Too hot to be working like I am :/

I started early, working on a top of roof chimney repair , today and finished early! I'm f'in soaked. Now I can get ready for the next job and cool off. I volunteered to help a farmer friend this weekend put up some fencing- he has  a bunch of cows ready to calve  and instead of staying around and getting put in the calving barns I built him, they are escaping out into a swamp that had gone completely dry. He's never fenced it, as it's always been too wet to get through. All his springs out in the far pastures have gone dry and his pond. Hay's easy to get in, but the corn is far too dry for decent silage. This keeps up, food prices will be affected.

Hit 94 here in my little piece of Penn's Woods yesterday and the weather dude is saying the temp.s will be back in the 90's again today.  Calling for low 80's and rain for tomorrow afternoon with the temp.s back to the 70's for the rest of the week.

As for calling someone dumb; I'll have you know I represent that remark!

Speaking of the phrase "face cord" how about the term being derived from what you see looking broadside at a "cord" of wood?  Your looking at the face of the cord, right?  Aww c-mon........... give me a little credit for trying.  Also, who the heck is "rick" and why would anyone name a wood pile after him?

Okay.... I'll go away but first, I'd like to show yinz a wood split-er any wood cutter should have.

Rain is on it's way fellas; problem is, it doesn't look like the 24 to 36 hr. soak-er we could use.

Weather dude says the temp hit 92 degrees in my neck of the woods today.  Took a little walk looking for some doves this afternoon and, it was so hot my dog told me..............

to go find my own dam birds.

Pafisher if ya think that 50 year old farm girl can split wood, ya gotta see her fly fishing.  Just have your life jacket on cause, your gonna rock the boat..... 10-4!

Troutbum, I'm thinkin that girl could out do Lizzy Borden; she certainly ain't giving those logs forty whacks!
