Been raining here since 4:00 am, nice easy slow rain, just like we need.   Looks like it will last a couple more hours before passing by.   This ought to make the grass grow again, I soooooooo miss riding around my yard on a lawn mower.  Makes me so happy I could just Shhhi*!

Since the long awaited 1.3 inches last week its been in the 90s and humid ever since. Grass that started geeening again quickly went back to brown and despite constant watering flowering shrubs in my yard have the flowers rotting on the stem and leaves curling and turning brown. A constant battle.
Not just a bit of drought but the longggg period of heat and humidity accompanying it have been awful. Heck one of my 2 apple trees already is dropping brown dead leaves.
Brook trough my yard  ( our old pasture) is at least as low as  it has ben in my lifetime -and has been so for quite a while.
Inches of rain would be Great but need  them often.
Starting to appreciate the issues out West with a new understanding.
Rain is predicted in the next few days but that has happened from time to time this Summer with only a rare couple of tenths happening. Weird year -some places nearby have been pounded and some of us are dry.

Been trying to salvage my garden with a garden hose. Tomatoes are hanging on but, lost my squash, pumpkins are about half size and orange, corn is okay and I'm diggin' taters which did quite well this year.

Been watchin' and readin' reports on this years "El Nino" The meteorologist are gettin' excited over this one sayin...... it's the biggin!!!!

I appreciate today's meterologist about as much as I appreciate today's biologist.

An El Nino year would bring ridiculously needed/MUST HAVE snow to the Sierra and Cascades and the Jet Stream lift would give us a warmer winter in the Northeast.  I'm all for it.  Might help the steel and salmon to come back a bit, too.  On Big O AND in the Pacific rivers.

Yea this weather has been tough on the water tables. Now that the salmon should be where they are supposed to be at this time , the guys on the lake are singing the same song as last season. TOUGH out there !!

From what I interpreted bout Nino is that out West it will be difficult but it decreases  the Hurricanes here on the East coast . Yea--we might actually get a lighter year even when the overall interpretation is harsher- mostly West.

I think I read where the "Farmers Almanac" is predicting warmer, colder, wetter, dryer, more snow, no snow, good fishing, conditions...............  for somewhere this year.    I'll have to get back to yinz on that.......................

Yeah, Yankee Cowboy, as a matter of fact I did learn that. Took me a while but, I finally figured out why my better half supported me in learning about fishing. :-P

I see your new here on the FishUSA boards so, let me be the first to welcome you and just say; anything you need to know....... just ask.

It's been brutally humid here all week.. Every afternoon clouds form but blow west so no rain.. My grass stopped growing about 3 weeks ago, wish the weeds would..
Things are changing dramatically though. Our corn fields are at peak, about twice as tall and full as in salmon country.. The deer are everywhere now between 4pm and 7am .. Have swerved a few times in the last week..
Lots of morning dew too..
Leaves are still about normal,, and streams around here have the carp stacked like salmon in the heads and tailouts of pools gasping oxygen ..

Man-O-Man we got a soaker overnight here in Northwest PA.  I heard it raining a time or two during the night but, I had no idea how much fell till I saw the pool level this morning.

NOAA shows area streams bumping up 6 to 10" including Walnut at Erie rising to 4.16' then falling back to 3.87' by 9:30 pm this evening.

Got the mower all ready to go for another ride around the yard as soon as the sun dries the stupid grass tomorrow.

I guess it's a good thing, looks like we might get a second cut off the field after-all.

If I had to guess we got two inches over the last two days. I have been eating corn for a week and my lawn is now six inches high

My grass ranges from 6" to 6'...lol. My one patch I'm gonna cut soon. Gonna use the tops for feeding animals and the thick bottom stalks for straw

Re:Weather thread 2015/09/06 12:53:47 (permalink)
This being such a beautiful holiday weekend I chose to stay home, away from the area lakes and crowds.   So, I decided to deal with the over abundant crop of tomatoes and potatoes I was blessed with this year.  I turned about 10 pounds of 'maters' into stewed tomatoes which, can be frozen for later use and I froze another 10 pound of fresh 'maters' to use in future sauces and stews.

Peeled around ten pound of potatoes of which, some shall be mashed for today's dinner and the remainder frozen for later use.

Now if, after this holiday, I could just catch me one of those big hybrid stripers swimming around Shenango Lake to have with some of those 'maters' and 'taters' I'd be a happy, happy, camper.

Hope all is enjoying this wonderful weekend and tight lines if yinz get out among the crowds, to do some fishing.

BTDT don't know if you can, but tomatoes and taters can easily and don't take up freezer space. I do a bunch of potatoes and when I want some the can be warmed up and mashed. Tomatoes either need lemon juice or a pressure canner. Probably info you know.........   I am canning  some salsa and some tomatoes, onions and peppers for easy chili making after a quick nap.
I started on my wood and had the neighbor come over and help. She can outwork most boys and appreciates the money. Split some rounds that close to three feet. Three more days like today and I will be done and have some to sell or save for next year.
Have to work tomorrow so no three day for me.

Re:Weather thread 2015/09/06 14:09:38 (permalink)
Thanks Clint, BTDT when it comes to canning and the trick with the lemon juice is something not known by many.  Even if we peel fresh taters for supper, we put lemon or lime juice in the water and let the taters sit til we're ready to cook.  Lemon or lime juice also serves as a great substitute for salt when it comes to bringing out the flavor of veggies, fish and, meat.

Learned how to freeze tomatoes and potatoes some years back and over time, as the family size grew smaller we began freezing rather then canning.

Be they frozen or canned, we both know there just ain't nothin like enjoying a bowl of soup or chili made from homegrown vegetables.

Only wood I use for heating is for my detached 'mancave' so, I don't burn anywhere what I use to but, I still find it relaxing to cut (what I need(lol)) wood to keep 'the cave' warm on those chilly winter nights.  Nice that you have someone to help with cutting and splitting if you burn cords by the score, during the year.

Have fun, gotta run, I hear a nap callin my name.

Turn about 15 cord to ash each year. Next year I think I may get a lad of logs delivered instead of messing around in the woods. I did the math and what I burn minus what I can sell puts me about break even on the load. With less work and danger of felling trees

Clint I hear ya on that... I've thought of it myself and have done the math as well. I had a source this past spring of an 18-21 cord load of logs for 500... I could sell 10 cord of my own and then buy that load. Ended up doing my own anyway though as I've been taking down nuisance trees, dying trees as well as eastern whites for lumber. Will say, ive yet to find a source that burns as well as my hard and soft maples I've been burning. Just recently found 2 eastern whites that are just under 50" in diameter along with an oak that us 52"... I have to believe these trees are virgin or early 2nd generation at most. Probably gonna be milling some of these timbers. They've run their course, and I prefer to keep the 75-100 year olds Still growing... Wood and veggies... Such great additions to the weather thread :)

18-20 cord of logs for 500 ? Geesh will they deliver here ? Lol. Going rate for log length loads 8-10 cord is $800 round here. We are still scavenging and been pretty luck with about 15-20 cord red oak a year in advance but things are getting thin and like Clint said , its tons of work and adding up the time and gas to transport ( less then 50 miles of course, lol ) its really getting old .
I would like to just have a tri axle and pup trailer load dropped at my house and cut on my terms .

Just got back from county fair . It's a HOT one out there today !!!! Now after the boat gets pulled next week you will hear me compiling " where is the ice " lol

That's 6-7  cords, or 21 FACE cords, ain't no truck on the road  hauling close to 60 ton of wood. I could be wrong, but my logger friends  and the the past 35 years of burning wood would make me believe different. Usually that's a smaller tandem axle that hauls a full, no space load.  Still a reasonable deal!
