I used to get terrible back pain after standing in one place for too long with waders on. Moving up and down stream caused no problem, but standing still felt like my back was literally about to break.

On the advice of some friends, I started doing some really low impact back and ab exercises during the fishing season, and strengthening my back has made a huge difference. After a long day on stream, I still can tell that I had some weight tugging on my shoulders all day, but I have nowhere near the pain I used to get (I'm probably a bit healthier too!).

Hey D-nymph, I remember

does anyone organize stream clean-ups anymore?
I find myself cleaning up everytime we go fishing, but it was nice to get a bunch of people together to help out like that...

I guess I'll have to dust off the ab-lounger and try to build up muscle too, we'll see if that helps.

thanks again everyone!

For a long time I thought I was the only person that experienced the back pain while wading. It seemed like people around me could fish for hours and after less than an hour I would be pressing the small of my back to releive the discomfort.  I've been reducing or eliminating the pull from suspenders holding up the waders, and also trying to eliminate stuff I carry in the vest. That has helped a little.

I had the same issue and discovered it was a combination of suspenders and non-supporting wading shoes.  Since I rarely waded above mid-thigh anyway, I switched to waist high waders and did away with the suspenders.  I also bought Chota wading shoes which offer a great deal of support.  My back issues are gone -- at least while fishing.

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion

FisherChic,

I recently purchase a Lumbar Pack that attaches to my Switchpack System from L.L.Bean and it has a belt on it as well. It has really made a difference, I have only worn it a few times but I'm not as sore the next day.......so a belt may help you.

I took a client out for the company i used to work for... a solid two days of 8hours on the streams.

On the third day, i had a sharp pain between my shoulder blades so bad I couldnt take a step, everytime I did I about hit the dirt.

The chiropractor said that just slipping on the rocks a little bit is enough to throw your back out. He snapped it back in, ive been good to go since. After archery season, Ill be going again.

Yeah, anymore when I slip I just let myself fall cause I know I will probably do more harm by trying to catch myself, and thats the truth.

i pop 4 about a half hour before getting on the creek, and 4 more 4 hours latter.

thanks for the tips guys!

I probably won't be fishing again for about a month, so that will give me time to do some exercises and go back to the chiropractor for a checkup.

I have problems fishing with my back as well, but mine is from either cracked vertebrae or spinabifita, according to my back DR.  When I wade in cold water my muscles tighten and strain my lower back.  Even though you have a good back, your muscles may be tightening up on you, and causing strain to the other muscles.  A good stretching helps.  Stretching your hamstring is probably the best.  Basically lay on your back, and put your knee to your chest.  Do this 2-3 times for 15 seconds for each leg.  Do some other leg stretches too.  It's free, and might jus work for you.
