pain in my....

lower back from standing/walking in my waders all day.
does anyone else get this?
I can walk through the water in a pair of old shoes all day and don't have this problem, so it has to be from my wading boots, I think.
they are pretty flat on the bottom, so I considered trying insoles with arch support, but figured that they probably wouldn't hold up very well from getting wet all the time.
I saw that Cabelas sells a belt for lower back support, so obviously there is a market for it.... But I was wondering if it was worth buying, and if it really helps.
any advice?

I see a Chiropractor every other week.

Buy new shoes with better arch support maybe?

I always have the back pain during and especially after being on the streams.  My new pain is in the feet.  Holy crap my feet hurt from just 2 hours yesterday, and everyday I've gone out this fall.  I know my boots need replaced eventually, but I replaced the felt in the Spring, and the laces last month, so they keep me safe and don't look too bad. In the meantime, are there wet insoles that can hold up to wading?

    thanks guys.

I've been to the chiropractor, and I'm pretty well aligned.
and I can be on my feet all day, in a variety of different shoes, and my feet will start to hurt but not my back.
I do get back pain like this from doing heavy lifting, or major work around my yard and garden, but not usually just from standing and walking.
I'm going to try and find some exercises to target my lower back.

I'd like to know if there are "wading insoles" too.

maybe I will buy that belt then

    thanks again!

I hurt within 1-2 hour of fishing and attribute it to the suspenders pulling down on my shoulders. If I take them off and sinch up the waist belt it helps a little.

Get ahold of a Hodgeman wader belt with the lumber support.  You will not believe how much better you will feel at the end of the day.

There are alot of things that may be a factor. One is terrain. Very often you are standing on a bank, with a slight, to large downhill slope. Another is posture. I often notice while fishing, that I tend to hunch my shoulders, and lean forward a bit, depending on how focused I am on my presentation. A third is rod position, ( tip off to the side, or straight foreward [ best] ). Rod, and reel balance also plays a part. These all seem trivial, but over the course of a long day fishing, will have an impact on your back.

Try the back support.  I use to have the same problem when fishing all day from the deck of my bass boat.  I tried better shoes and even sitting part of the day but nothing helped.  Then a friend told me to try the back support and it really helps.

Do you wear vest or a use a backback?  The reason I ask is sometimes if the weight not distributed evenly over your body it may strain certain muscle groups.  This is why many vests use a neck collar.  Also you might try to lace your boots a little snugger for more support.  Hope this helps ya!

Waders are a killer no matter what. My biggest problem is the 30# vest
loaded with tackle. I need to carry less gear. I found by placing two 16 oz.
bottled waters in the back it evens out the load.

There's a device called a "Stream Buddy" that is a bicycle seat on an adjustable,aircraft-grade aluminum pole. You prop the pole on an angle and use the seat somewhat like a bar stool to take the weight off your back and legs. You don't sit on it like a chair, but use it to relax your back and legs. I always thought it would be great for fishing the lake at Trout Run. Standing in one spot for hrs. is a killer and this sure would help ease the pain.
I believe it is made in West Newton PA. I'll try to find some more info on it.

Stream Buddy has probably gone out of buisness.
Links on old board do not work, but there is a description. Searched ebay none today.

sorry dude, you're gonna have to find someone else to help you out there....

    thanks for the tips guys.
I do wear a vest, and all the gear is in the front pockets, I don't carry alot of gear, but it's probably enough to throw things off.
the water bottles in the back are a good idea too.

ive notice that the weight of the waders on the shoulder straps cause me to lean forward and hunch. i put all the necessary gear in a fanny bag and use the fanny bag to hold up my waders instead of the shoulder straps. seems to take the weight of your back n distubute it to the legs. just another option of many. good luck

To get the problem fixed, instead of just dealing with the ache,a chiropractor is a good place to start.I had the same thing as you and it really ruins an otherwise great day of fishing or anything else when it acts up.One bad spot affects your posture and can cause damage to the discs next to the bad one and the problem only gets worse.

    FisherChic,
Pain such as you describe can be more serious than just a "pain in the back".  It could be caused by a slightly, or moderately buldging disk in your lower back.  Back Pain caused by wearing a vest or the shoulder straps of waders are almost surely a sign of disk misalignment (OR WORSE) in the  5-6-7 vertebra of the neck.  Before you go to get your back twisted, go to your DR and request an MRI of the Pain area to check for problems.  I didn't; and now I need more surgery than a little with little hope of actual repair.  Also, do you normally work in heels?  If so the flat bottoms of waders can definately be causing new/different spinal alignments.

it hasn't been all that long since I've been to the chiro. I can't remember when exactly but it's been less than a year. And my spine was actually in pretty good shape. he did ex-rays when I was there, I'm pretty sure that would show disk alignments and all.... My posture isn't perfect, but it's not bad either.
And wouldn't back problems like that show up more often than just when I wear my waders?
my suspender straps don't put any stress on my shoulders at all, I wear them pretty loose because the waders are neoprene and seem to stay up pretty well without the shoulder straps...
sometimes I wear heels, but wear flat bottom soles more often

her hubby might not like that.
he's one of them big scarry lookin' biker duuds too

hey Fisherchic, get rid of the heavy neos and get some light wt breathables.
    Bet that will help some.
My back gets achy after standing in the same spot for long periods.
Moving around, stretching and sitting for a few helps

Also lightening my pack helps as well.

Been there, done that. Nothing worst than yanking on your boots and stretching your legs after being in the water for hrs. I put plastic bags on my feet before I put them in my waders (breathables) and they slide off much easier. Maybe I am sinching the shoulder straps up too much.

Hi fisherchic, I also met you and you're husband at the stream cleanup a few years back.

I had similar problems when I wore neoprenes.

Fleece long underwear when it's cold will do more to keep you warm than neoprene.  That stuff is awesome.  I was skeptical too, but breathables are the way to go.  They are sooo much lighter.  And the stocking foot types with decent boots will really help you lighten the load and get around all day.  You can also convert chest high breathables into wiast high by buckling your suspenders around the waist, and rolling down the chest part.  Then there is even less strain on the back.

Obviously, some days it's just so cold, you're going to get cold regardless.  But if it's in the 20 degree range, a pair of regular long underwear, a pair of fleece L.U. and thin pants, and I'm pretty good all day, even if I don't walk much.

    Totally worth the investment.
