Must be nice... though I fish my home waters just as much. There is nothing like the feeling of a steelhead at the end of your line. I'm debating on buying a camper and leaving it up at folly's or something. Would be a nice get away place.

you must have never hooked into any hybrid stripers?

Archery season, bird season, late trout season.... I cant think of any reason to trade solitude for fishing with 10,000 people who cant even answer a womans question... you know who you were, kelsea said she couldnt believe the greed.

I usually make 2-3 trips a year, its a 3 1/2 hour drive for me. I learned something over the past two years and that is, if it doesnt rain for days on end, im not going. Ive never seen so much crap fishing in all my years as I have with it being clear. When people see the fish, its almost impossible to catch them. You give me some muddy water where people think its not even worth fishing... when a guy thinks your insane for even crossing the creek. Yeah, thats how I like it. You can bet your money the next time I hear that its BLOWN OUT... ill be there. I hate to drive up and drive back home in the same day but what the heck. Its the only way its even worth coming.

you havent spent nearly enough time fishing up there then because rarely is the water anything but clear.  you show me a decent group of steelhead in any gin clear water and ill show you a jig and a flatfish lure that will catch it.  even in near 80 degree temps.  they chased flatfish 2 weeks ago in the creek like they didnt even care it was connected to a fishing line.  if its flyfishing then i cant help you.  these fish want to chase no matter what time of year and what conditions.  the colder it gets the slower the chase but they will slam a jig harder in january then they will right now.  clear water is my personal favorite for loads of fish to catch.  its a bit extreme right now no doubt but not enough to keep them from hitting.  its real simple to me, these fish chase bait in the lake with wreckless abandon and while they will hit many things in the creeks preying on their instincts instead of drifting a fly is the way i get my blood flowing.  dirty water drifting for me can be great but boring after a while.  bathtub fishing or not, it sure is fun to see a big steelhead chase and swipe.

My thoughts exactly.  Grab some fathead minnows and some jigs (lots of flash) and you can rack up some serious numbers in low/clear water.  If the water isnt moving your bait, then you need to be moving it!

I'm about a 5 to 10 minute drive from decent spots on Elk, so I figure I fish way too many times than I really need to.

pxatim, thats a decent one from the backchannel 24"?, a 10 pound hybrid will put more fight than steele though, its close but nottin beats stripers in the current from the locks

Yeah you recognize the place haha. That was my get away spot when I was in school in the Burgh. Caught and saw many insane fish come out of there. Some huge cat fish and walleye in there.
I caught that one on 6lb test and he gave me a run for the money. I agree they do put up a hell of a fight. But there's something I love about flyfishing for steelhead. Maybe it's the challenge I don't know. Each give me that rush that gets my heart going though.

I live 54 miles from 16 mile and make the trip 25-35 times depending on the weather and my archery season. Most of my fishing is in the mile creeks in late Nov through the winter.

???????????????

I fished 3 times in my life, im hoping this year i get to go more than a few times, but i like to go during the week and on the cold days so i have holes to myself.  also wanted to get some advice on a nice but not too $$$$ steelhead rod, right now im using a 6 foot ugly stick.

Hey, I think we live in just about the same neighborhood.

I go up at least once week. Usually have room for at least 1 more.

You don't need to buy any equipment. I have plenty and you can try it out before
you drop some cash on something you might not like.

Upper Elk is about a mile from where I live.  I get out usually twice a week.  It would be more but with school...

My dad is also looking to buy a place on W Lake Rd. so... well, you know

I'm off the mark this season.
only been up twice so far.

Guess i average 30 to 40 trips a season.

average drive is anywhere from 70 to 96 miles one way
(depending what trib)

I'm lucky if i get to go 1 time a year, if i do i go either with my uncle or cousin. I've only caught 3 but they were fun and i hope to go more as time passes and work permits.
