I never saw a bear while fishing, but I did hear Tippy taking a dump stream side once.  Thank God I was not down wind.

BACK IN THE 80'S WE WERE ON THE BIG MANISTEE ANCHORED ON A BAR FISHING THE HOLE WHERE PINE CREEK DUMPS IN WHEN WE HEARD THIS GOD AWFUL SCHEECHING, MOANING, SCREAMING. TWO MINKS WERE MATING ON THE FAR BANK. THE MALE HAD THE FEMALE BY THE BACK OF THE NECK AND CLAWS WERE FLYING. THEN  I UNDERSTOOD THE OLD SAYING, "TO F... LIKE A MINK"

Sealegs, that was good for a laugh, but I'm sure it was n't funny at the time!
A friends son and buddy were scouting the woods in Carbon County years ago before deer season. They were walking on a old logging trail that was flanked by heavy Laurel. While strolling along on soft wet leaves making very liitle sound they were stopped by a loud "woof".Then all of a sudden two bear cubs appeared next to them climbing a tree, then the Laurel parted and this very upset LARGE bear appeared heading for the boys. The boys turned and set a record 500 yd dash in the opposite direction down the logging road. They never looked back till they got out of the woods and ran out of breath, good thing the sow bear did n't pursue them because there is no way you can outrun a bear!

Tippy could pass for a good sized hairy black bear in low light conditions...

Tippy if that is the case, be sure to wear orange during bear season...  Just as an aside, it is not at all a bad idea to wear an orange cap when fishing the upper parts of the streams in hunting season, especially deer season.

It is not exactly the Erie tribs, but they are bear pictures none the less!

Not quite Walnut, but close. Take a look to my right, in the background. It's bigfoot and her kids.

This is on another river, The American. Plenty of sockeye...and bears....

I believe these are the same cubs as in photo one

Again, the same sow/cubs

Right at the end of the dock.

This is a picture from Brooks Falls. Not exactly the most ideal place to wet a line.....

I was at Walnut on Wednesday. A silver colored mink tried to eat a steelhead that a fellow had roped at the waterfall. The guy was poking at it with a stick, but it wasn't enough to chase the persistent little fellow away. Anyway, the guy finally cahsed it downstream. It came meandering past me, and stopped to visit the two fellows below me. One of them had a fish on. The mink took this opportunity to knock his minnow jar over and start to scarf down the poor fellow's bait. The guy was poking at him with a stick about as big as a pencil, and the mink was chirping and devouring his minnows while the guy is fighting his fish. While the guy was ladling his minnows back into his jar, the creature was still trying to eat the leftovers. I was laughing so hard that I had to sit down for a spell. I wonder if the mink would eat any of my flies? They're pretty good. We also so a coyote out on the ice at the mouth of Walnut on our last trip up last season, pretty cool.   Fishmonger

fishmonger,

I think the mink was actually a ferret.  I have seen it as far up as the chutes to almost down to the lake.  It is very friendly and not afraid of people.  It does like minnows, but from what a guy told me a while back, it really like gobies.  One day he and buddy were catching gobies down off the wall and pitching them up on the land.  The ferret would run over and grab them and chow down.  When the ferret wanted another one, it would rub itself on the leg of one of the fisherman and sit and wait for him to catch another.  He said it was pretty amazing.

I live in Michigan, and was fishing the East Branch of the Augres river for Steel, one fine Spring day.   I was walking the bank and came across a pine tree with fresh claw marks from a bear marking its territory.   Fresh, like dripping sap, and white wood.   They were higher than I could reach, and about 1 1/2 inches into the tree - and circled a tree which was about 18" across.    I hadn't caught any Steelhead, but Suckers were running heavy; so I quickly caught a few Suckers and strung them (there is no limit on them), and figured that if Mr Wooly came along I would toss him some easy food and quickfoot it out of there.   Never ran into him, but I was looking over my shoulder for the rest of the day.   Funny thing is that there is a store about 15 miles away, right on my way to our cabin, that has a bear in a cage; so I stopped and gave the Suckers to the owner for that bear.   I give him Salmon I have caught, which I only kept for the eggs, too.   He said his bear always tells him to thank me.
