I can't say the reasoning but have 2 guesses that seems logical.
1. Its still part of the LO settlement and restoration project started years ago with I believe the LFZ. Along with lots of grant money.. NYS has be dishing out more than we can handle as taxpayers.
2. Which I doubt here, it's a TU funded project ( again grant money) to tear down unnecessary dams and do stream restoration projects.
Seeing this isn't an actual dam, I'm leaning towards project #1
As for #2.
TU has taken down dams built in the 19th century on streams for logging purposes back then but remained until recently .
I know some of the rivers/ streams have changed dramatically since they started this.
Once nice holding pools for trout have become death trap sandbars and lots of anchors ice.
