Hatchery Fish
I am looking for a hatchery in the south central part of PA that I can buy trout from. Anyone know of a place I could buy some browns and rainbows to stock a friends new pond he just built... Any info would be much appreciated...

I would think twice about that one, those ponds get VERY warm in the summer. Your best to stick with bass and panfish.

If the pond is spring fed you should be ok. I'd have him stock it with gills, minnies & shiners for the first year. Other wise you will have to feed them trout every day & his cost will go way up.

call zetts fish hatchery in drifting ,just above rte 80, the number is (814) 345-5357. i just got 25 inch and a half brown trout of of them, to stock our clarifier at work. i think they died, dissolved oxygen is too low.

make sure the springs are not just wet springs (dry up in summer) Get some veg. growin. If poss. Elc. sprinklers will help out for oxygen when needed. What size pond is it & how deep? water intake too outflow Makes a dif. for the sz. of pond for trout also without some elec. supply I would think. Them babbies look like pike after a few years if you start with smaller ones.

I have some experience stocking ponds. Typically its a put n take afair. Unless the pond has a good spring source, the fish are gone by June.
I buy my fish from Green Spring Trout Hatchery in Newville a few miles from Big Spring Creek. Chuck treats us pretty well. I wouldn't buy browns because they cost more. Laurel Hill hatchery in Somerset is also a good source of fish. 12 to 13" fish cost about 2.75 a piece. The stocking rate is recommended to be 100 fish per acre. Hope this helps. The pond has been since late spring of last year and already stocked with fatheads. The pond was full of them by the end of the fall. Even in the heat of mid summer it was 67 degrees except for in the shallowest of sections where it was in the low 70's. It is spring fed and the water that comes out of the spring is a chilly 55 degrees. So I am sure trout will do just fine through the summer months. Thanks for all the info!

check on the dissolved oxygen, trout need at least 7.5 ppm to survive, a waterfall or a fountain should work. but if minnows are there maybe it's ok for trout.

Thanks to all for the ideas. I ended up getting my trout at Laurel Hill in Osterburg. Trout seemed pretty decent and the price wasn't bad. We'll see how they do! THANKS AGAIN!!!
