That's the last time I saw rangers working on Arthur.  Was four or five years ago now.  Someone put two jetskis in at Porter's Cove and roared off downlake.  Within 30 mins they got scooped up.  That would make Arthur unfishable for me.  And it is already a zoo in the main lake.

The DCNR Ranger boat was out on the 4th, but all he did was sit out from the swimming beach for a while, then motor off only return a little bit later.

Was out Friday night. Beautiful clear night and warm. Hot during the day.

Fished the treeline by the dam early. Was casting a buzzbait and stopped the lure by the boat to fiddle with my reel. Of course a sizeable pike was following it and lost interest the minute the lure stopped moving. I also pretty sure he gave me the pike equivalent of a middle finger.

Worked the lily pads at dusk in Trout Cove. Nothing but little bass--my guess it was still to hot.

Set up for the night across from NP. Alewives were there but activity seems dimished‐-probably late season for them. Threw out some bait rods with chicken liver, cut bait and live alewives. Caught many bullheads, a few nice channels, dink bass and a hawg of a crappie (on an alewife). Mr. Wiper, as usual, did not make an appearance. Nothing on casted lures.

Pulled off the water about midnight. Ok night but nothing spectacular.

Sounded like a good time to me. Congratulations on your catching.

Enjoyed the read. Sucks though about the stupid Pike. Reminds me of thing called a figure 8.

are any of y'all still having success with wipers?  really seems to be fizzling out quick the last couple times i have been there.  not that i've ever been very good at it anyway.

even the good largemouth night bite a few weeks ago that kept my son from being totally bored while wiper fishing is dying down.  and there don't seem to seem to be as many channel cats biting either.

i gotta get a boat or a couple yaks.  being shore bound in the dog days of summer sux.

They are definitely frustrating at times, but worth it. Summer doldrums are still there. But does give you a much better chance of getting fish that are hanging on deeper structure. No guarantees at all, but at least gets you to where they are at times.

I have used them on days of tough bite and did nothing...  I would think on days where they are just nipping at the tails or not holding on, they would help?  Probably similar to adding scents.

FYI - Bobby Garlands do not do well marinating in scents (at least what I have tried).  They turn hard and lose their action.

Garland has a merrid of colors. Pretty much only tail I use now. I do own some bigger profile tails too. Don't sleep on those, jus say'IN.. I have noticed the bigger tail produces better average on size.

I remember when the only soft plastics available were twister tails and grub bodies. Then came the mini tubes.. Now there are 100s of companies making 1000s of styles and colors. Guess its all in what your comfortable and confident with.

No doubt.  I was on a Gulp kick for the longest time.  Still use.  When the crappie are hitting, they will take just about anything.  Even some days they are just picky.  I went out with one of my fishing buddy neighbors.  I couldn't buy a bite on Garland's while my buddy was getting hits on every cast with marabou jigs (I think he tied up for steelhead).  We stuck around to night and of course he lands the only wiper of the night too.  I was about to have words with Bobby Garland after my other neighbors reminded me of how much better angler he is...

i just told a friend the other day who is kind of a newb to fishing when he was asking about what i use, that if i could only use one bait for the rest of my life, it would be gulp minnows.

gonna have to try some of those bobby garland baby shad.  have read a lot about them.  'bout time for the baby shad to start getting hammered along the shoreline in the evening at arthur.

I can’t disagree with the one bait thing. Gulp minnow might be mine too. Just about every species seems to think they are real minnows. Bobby Garland and other traditional plastics are just easier though. Gulp needs a no spill container so harder to carry. You need to take the Gulp off when done, so can’t be lazy... Traditional plastics can be fixed with a lighter and last a good bit longer in general. Gulp makes your fingers stinky too, which, well, is pretty cool! Gulp is always on my boat, but usually start out with a traditional plastic. Kind of like when I buy live minnows. They are only used if I can’t get bites on imitations first. Late fall and early winter I seem to only be able to get bites with live though.

A few weeks ago I was fishing in Western OH with my cousin. There were baby shad all over the place. I trusted my cousin to use his gear on his lake. Wish that I would have brought some of my crappie plastics to mimic those baby Shad. A few white bass blitzes in them would have been fun to play with

I’ve never had much luck with those at Arthur. And yes, I have tried both bloodworm and sand flea flavor... Not for very long and when nothing else was working, so not really the best sample. I’m sure a hungry channel cat would have a hard time not grabbing some. I would bet if fished the right way at the right time would get other fish too. I don’t have the patience to try though.

My experience with scent is a bit different. I keep a handful of my BG's in a gulp jar and leave them soak. Some days it makes a difference, other days it matters not. No issues with hardening.

Does anyone know they make a 1.5 inch gulp minnow? If they do I've never found them. They would be dynamite.

never saw 1.5” gulps, but I’ve thought the same pt2. once in awhile when trying to catch sluggish or smaller bluegills at arthur to use for cut bait for cats, i’ll trim a little off the nose. WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T USE YOUR TEETH TO DO THAT. 🤮

found some 4” gulps at a big box store last year and bought a couple packs. no success on em till this summer. got frustrated throwing bombers with no hits for a couple hours one night for wipers, so busted those out and worked ‘em in different ways and got a largemouth, channel cat and lost a keeper ‘eye at my feet in about 20 minutes. they will definitely be in my bag of tricks next summer when it’s time for wipers again.

Re: Lake Arthur 2020 2020/08/03 21:57:04 (permalink)
I have never tried marinating BG in Gulp. It was an oil based shad flavor, not sure of brand. I think dipping or soaking for an hour or so would be fine. Mine were soaking for 2-3 weeks and went to use and were stiff. Not Gulp bait out of juice jerky hard, but enough to not give the wiggle that BG have. Might still work, but opted for the fresh ones that wiggled. If Gulp would come out with that same body type, would be awesome. Bass Pro and some others do a knockoff and work well. BG seem to be the same price when FUSA puts them on sale, so I prefer them myself. I have a few of their other body types too. I like one of them more than the baby. But not going to say what one... Man of mystery!

Oh yeah, I probably cut down my 2.5” Gulp more than use whole. Not sure why they don’t have the fire tiger in the 1”? 1.5” would be perfect.

Make sure you keep an eye on Berkley for rebates too. With FUSA running their promo and Berkley, they are cheaper than live bait. Especially for being able to catch 10 off of one.

I have had luck with the Lock and Lock food containers too. I use the twi smaller containers and “hey honey, I bought you these nice containers for left overs” for the others. Win win. 😉

I've tried cutting the 2" gulp minnows, they are still a bit too bulky up-front. The profile doesn't seem quite right although I'm not fish. Who knows what makes em' sizzle?

Anyone ever had any luck storing different colored baits together? By pure accident, I mixed a few pearl white and flo. green Bobby Garland's that created a subtle opaque green-white bait that works really well for me in low light.

couple years ago i bought one of these mostly for gulp shrimp when i'm fishing the salt on the gulf coast.  i wade a lot and don't have to worry about water diluting the juice.  sand washes right off of it too.  this thing's great and if you use a lot of soft plastics with juice, i'd really recommend it.

i've put a little bit of everything in there cause it's so handy.  gulp minnows, gulp minnow grubs, gulp shrimp and matrix shad.  thought the abundance of chartreuse baits in there would discolor the natural or white baits, but it hasn't.  might be the liquid in there?  just a guess.

berkley power worms that i use for trout and steelhead are another story though.  no juice in em.  the colors definitely bleed into each other.  i had mixed a bunch of white, pink and chartreuse, and the white ones that picked up a little color seemed to be really good this year at once in awhile when the main colors weren't working well.
