trout fishing

Although Twin lakes,Northmoreland,& Keystone State park are open for fishing now, some people forget that it is C&R for trout until first day. Although these lakes have posters reminding people of this fact, some are still keeping Trout. Also remember to set your clocks ahead 1 hr. to-nite so that you can have another hr. of day-light to fish tomorrow.  sam

Buggar..So the club trout are now under control of the state for 6 weeks!?...Lucky you posted this Sam..I was going to go today..thinking the C&R did not start until April 1st after the state stocking....I guess that was the old rules...In fact..the state does not even stock until March 30th...Not bloody fair!...Then on Opening ten thousand descend on the place and keep every fish, half of which end up in the garden....

Crappie is 9" limit is 20 per day. No size on gills. I just cleaned 8 nice gills that my bud gave me yesterday.I wanted to cook them whole, but my back was killing me after I scaled 2 of them  so I went back to filleting them. I hear that there was quite a crowd there to-day.  sam

I did the same last year trying my hands in scaling. I didn’t realize how much a PIA it was and made a mess. Thought it was just me! The whole ones came out pretty good and kind of a unique meal. Not worth it to me, when the fillets come out so good and actually easier.

Enjoying the read when I remembered hearing a couple of good ole boys talkin about eating blugill and crappie tails.

Figured I'd best not muddy any water so I kept my mouth shut (if ya can believe that) and when I got home I searched Youtube.

    Sure enough guys.....

    For your pleasure.

Sam the video you put up was nicely done. The guy mentioned the power scalers and I remember those very well.

I have an old hand scaler that has two rows of teeth and man would the scales fly when I used that thing. Also remember fishing knives having a row of teeth across the back of the blade that worked well.

As kids between ice out and trout season, we targeted redhorse upstream of the Amalie on French Creek. We had an elderly neighbor who baked or made fish cakes and always glady accepted a few fish. Before scaling he would submerge the fish in hot tap water then used a spoon. Scales just piled up as he made each pass.

I learned in the late 60s, watching fish being filleted at Erie, and I can not remember ever scaling another fish. I'm sure I've caught a few fish since then, just don't remember scaling them. 😁

Anyway, I'll be attempting some fish tails come this crappie season.

    Good times and tight lines.
