State Record Catfish Caught

Almost exactly a month ago, it was confirmed that the 50 pound, 7 ounce flathead catfish that was caught out of the Susquehanna River has set a new Pennsylvania record.  The fish was caught on April 6th by Jeff Bonawitz, of Lancaster County. According to an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Mr. Bonawitz had actually used a bluegill that was caught earlier in the day as bait. The fight lasted 25 minutes before finally being brought in. The fish measured 45 1/4 inches in length with a girth of 31 1/4 inches. After the fish was officially measured, it was released alive and well back into the Susquehanna River for another angler to experience the fight of a lifetime.

Congrats to the angler. I'm sure the Flathead record is broken many times a yr. Don't really know anyone that would take the time or hassle to get one officially weighed.

Flatties have quite a cult following. Plenty of guys in western Pa and all the guys at 3 rivers catfish club and the tournaments they're involved in, I bet they would take the time to weigh one in

I think crappie is right, it has been broken locally many times, I've seen plenty of pics. But also, like xtopwaterkingx said, and joebaker79 said to me before, being invasive there, the are getting enormous, no checks and balances for invasive species yet. When that river hits 60 lbs, and it will, I think our area is out of contention, unless a loner got loose in a local lake.
