Flintlock. Who's going?

Tomorrow starts one of my favorite seasons. Out traditional flintlock season. My Firestorm is cleaned and ready to go. I won't get out till Saturday. Plan on hitting a farm game cooperative property in 2A. Usually a god bit of pressure from a lease next door that moves the deer around. Doesn't look like any snow in these parts and hopefully any rain stays away.

Who else is picking up the smokepole for some fun late season hunting?

I'll be getting out all week. It's my favorite hunting season if I have any tags left.

My old Thompson Renegade .54 is ready. I made 5 charges up and lube 5 old Thompson maxi balls. I wish there was snow but as long as no rain I'll be ok. I had deer 5 yards from me with snow camo on.

Got my renegade ready also. Did a quick walk about this morning and there seems to be a few possible victims in my hunt area.

Saturdays weather looks good for most of Pa. No snow, but at least dry and chilly. I plan an all day sneak and sit adventure.

Hunting Saturday till noon 0 deer. Hunted till it started raining around 10:15 today 0 deer. Did see something interesting three squirrels came out of a den tree, two where grays and one was jet black with a white throat. Haven't seen that since many years hunting up in the big woods.

Great day in the woods yesterday even though no shots fired. I saw 24 deer including two bucks. Everything was either too far or couldn't get them to stop. Rain quit before dawn and the sun was out at daybreak.

Saw something very interesting. Guys were driving a side hill that I could see pretty well from my vantage point. 4 deer busted across the hill a few hundred yards ahead of the drivers. The lead doe hopped a fairly large fallen down tree and immediately laid down on the other side and put her head down flat on the ground. The other deer followed suit. When the drivers passed about 60 yards above them, they got up and went back the way the came. Smart critters!!

Yesterday I watched the day come alive listening to turkeys on the roost, saw a very nice sunrise until the fog rolled in, saw 7 doe and a small buck but couldn’t get any shots. The turkeys eventually flew down and fed up past me. I counted 98 give or take a couple crossing the gas line my stand is on. The afternoon hunt was uneventful as I only saw an archery hunter and a few (30 or so) turkeys.

Looks like the deer & Turks are starting to yard up a bit finally down here. My gang got 3 does over the week-end & saw quite a few hanging out in larger groups than normal. They saw a few Bucks but only 1 shooter that didn't present a shot.My son had 5 different bucks on his trail cam in his back yard of which 2 were shooters, but he already shot a Buck this year. I haven't heard of any yotes being taken yet. Killing me to not being out & about. btw there is still about 10000 doe tags left in 2-b. I think that the approx. $100 fee to get 1 processed if you can't do your own has a lot to do with that. Also a piebald doe is still sneaking around in the area that I got mine a few years ago.    sam

Today is the first day in this late season that we have had a skiff of snow here in the SW corner. Just hasn't been great hunting conditions. Saturday we are supposed to get an inch or two in the afternoon, but the season will be coming to a close outside of the SRAs.

Sad part of the later seasons is the fact that the fetuses in the pregnant Does are more developed every day & is very unsettling to see. I know that it doesn't really matter when the Doe is shot , but I don't like to see it & would advise anyone that has a youngster with them to either explain it before time or don't dwell on it when the time comes. On the other hand it is more exciting to hunt on snow with a muzzleloader & it cuts down on deer losses due to a little blood trail.   sam

Not a good coating now where you are planning on hunting?  I guess it is kind of spotty.  Here in West Mifflin at work the ground is coated but, several areas b/w here and home are mostly grass.  Back home in Hempfield ground is coated and east/north of there b/w toll 66 and rte 22, snow covers the ground pretty good.....

Western Allegheny County nothing on the ground now. Plan on hunting western Washington County tomorrow just north of I 70. Looks like light snow coming in around 1 or so with the latest models.

Well, my morning consisted of falling into a stream in the dark when I slipped on a flat rock as I tried to hop scotch across the rocks. Water went down into my boot and all over my flintlock. Bent my shooting sticks. Climbed out, dried off the best I could. Pushed my powder and ball out. Cleaned barrel and reloaded. straightened out my sticks the best I could.

Got to where I wanted to be 1/2 hour late. Got settled in and 10 minutes later a nice fat doe walked out and posed for me at about 60 yards. Proceeded to miss her clean.

What a morning. Back home now. Drying out and plan to archery hunt tonight close to home.

Crisp crunchy morning. I got nestled into a blow down with three well used trails. I heard a shot and a couple minutes later a big fat doe was at 30 yards broadside. Well that didn't work out, set the set trigger and just about ready to squeeze she she looks right at me and take a couple leaps away, bad angle so no shot. About an hour later big one and a skipper at 50 yards. Then they start angling away,at about 55-60 I let one rip,ah unfortunately a clean miss. I searched for hair / blood a lot longer than I should, there was a dusting of snow on the leaves. Care home and cleaned that gun for an hour, worst part of flintlock hunting. Oh well still got 3 weeks to kill a buck or doe in Ohio. Check my camera's in Ohio yesterday and several bucks dropped one side already.

Saw 3 this morning but to far for a shot. This evening had 2 doe come in with about 5 minutes left in the season. The big one busted me swinging the gun into position and preceded to double back and circle me about 200yds out. All in all it was still a successful season.

A buddy sent me a pict. of a piebald doe that a guy got on the next to the last day in 2-d. He got it about 1 mile away from the one that I got a couple of years ago. Odd thing is that they both only had to make it one more day after the intense pressure that was on them.they prob. were related & it was cool knowing that they were around.   sam
