"Quote" Steelhead which survive spawning spend the next year recovering and gain very little weight. What is the limit on steelhead in the DSR? "Quote" Not referencing dsr... staircase eye of the needle have pocket pickers well in to November. This never was the case. Sorry not a scientist, but I'd suppose a 12# (common size for this season) comes back in the teens class the following year Merry Christmas and happy new year😁

Not according to scientists. Few males survive and the hens spend most of the next year regaining lost weight. As to the DSR, while there were fewer people back in the before times , there were fish being kept which isn't happing now. Should be a plus for upstream numbers. And the stairs and eye were the first places to attract steelsnaggers. The butchery there was there. Yes the numbers of people on the river has increased there as everywhere else. That sux and means a minus in fish numbers. Happy holidays

Even if the changed the law to NO keeping of Steel the fact that they get ripped up would lead to the demise of many.

No doubt about that. I think it was a matter of less fish ( missing year class? the normal 6-8 pounders that are usually the bulk ) or they ran very late this year. I haven't been up since the water was big so don't know what moved last week. Maybe right after Christmas I'll get up for a sampling. Have seen some pics of recent entering fish from coloring.

Fished the Salmon River this past Monday and Tuesday, 12/17 & 18. The bite was pretty good Monday but slower on Tuesday with the cold front that moved through overnight. Five for eight Monday, two for five Tuesday. The biggest fish was 32" and a shade under 12 lbs on the boga grips.

More photos. The fish are there and spread out throughout the system . You just have to find the right combination to get them to bite. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Just read the super rosy Lake report from Aug 30 2018 by the State. Looked fantastic out there for the boat guys for everything. Steel wasn't mentioned but Hos browns and Kings were reported in really great numbers. Good as the river was this fall the question begs attention--\ - WHAT HAPPENED???. They were talking an over 200 percent increase for Kings alone from 5 years ago--

They went home in boxed out limits. That I know from friends that work the lake. Good news is , I believe, the steelhead are healthy. No sign of vitamin deficient with some large fish entering.
Can't wait, wait , wait for it , cries of the sky is falling again for some reason or another . The winter is to cold and all the alwives are dying, the winter is to warm and all the salmon are feeding on them, etc, etc. In no way is this last sentence towards anyone who posts "here" but STFU and just go fish, lol.
My tears may flow tomorrow morning if I drive 120 miles north and find a river flowing through the lake that was once frozen. Either way, I'll find someplace to fish up there in the Adks, maybe just not trout on a short pole.

No, no. Not saying you are rg. I have nothing to give from personal observations as I haven't visited the region since last winter and early spring. It just fell outta flavor for myself so it's difficult to pull me in to making the trip with so many other great opportunities within this state N.Y. provides. Don't get me wrong, steelhead and salmon are beautiful fish . I'm living those memories right now through other people i know that fish there often or have turned others on to their new experiences.
We , myself, all complain at some point or another why it wasn't as expected but I now just chalk things up to a bad days fishing is better then a good day at work. Life is too short and way to scientific for an old dog like me to get ruffled up.

I've always held to the belief that there are no guarantees when you venture outdoors whether it be hunting big & small game or ply your favorite piece of water. One thing is certain, if you don't get off the couch you'll never know. As for the SR this season the salmon run was spread out with fish coming in right into early November. There was no huge run so to speak but plenty of fish in the system if you were willing to make the effort. Guides are presently boating a stray king or two on the Oz and the SR. As for steelhead I think my photos prove my point, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I must admit I was concerned when they dropped the water levels to around 350 cfs the weekend I arrived. With runoff it was around 500 cfs, maybe a shade higher. Before they dropped the levels the fishing was very good with a number of very respectable fish hitting the net. Go fish, you just might be pleasantly surprised.

Low 60s here today Columbus day weekend saw steady action. No mega runs just pods of 3-4 fish coming up from the Joss hole or the other side in fairly steady fashion. We had a great time on the SR and can't wait for next season.

So what other state on the east coast ( within a days drive ) gives folks the year round pleasures of outdoors opportunity that N.Y. does ? I know I'm swinging , but for all that I have here , I can't think of any other. Born , raised and will die in N.Y..

I agree- even as an ex part timer. The great variety of options may, however, have something to do with NY being about as big as all of New England put together. That said NY manages its resources VERY VERY well.

Spent a few days this past week on the SR. I managed to grind out a couple of nice fish. Water is still very cold and few if any spawning beds were observed although they did start taking eggs at the hatchery mid-week. Drop back season should be a good one going right into early May or later.

HT, a mix of droppies and new fish moving up river. From what I heard the fly zones and hatchery are loaded with fish. The spots mid river where you would expect to see redds were quiet.

The opening of UFZ should be a slaughter tomorrow. I'd expect there will be a huge amount of fish on reds up there. I'm sure the pucker bush creek will have creepers as well.
