keystone state park

Went there this afternoon, water was high & muddy, fishing was slow, but the Brookies are in spawning mode & the colors are beautiful. They are squirting eggs when landed. Quite a few trout were going over the outflow.  sam

Does a private club stock brookies? Cause PFBC stocking reports for 2018, show only Rainbows got stocked.

Why would Brooks need stocked if they spawn naturally? Sam said they was "spitting eggs" and bright in color.

Its a 78 acre lake. They arent wild fish.

psu, the brookies were stocked by the state, there used to be a disclaimer on stocking info that it could change as conditions warrant as to dates, numbers & specie stocked.  John, for some reason that I don't understand, most stocked trout in Penna. lakes don't successfully spawn, don't know about streams. I have watched many times when Trout at some lakes have nested, but couldn't tell if the eggs hatched or not. This is one reason that the state allows Trout fishing now in some lakes where they used to prohibit it because of the spawn before they realized that the spawn was mostly un- successful. Also because of the fact that the state also raises different strains of trout that spawn at different times.  sam

Yea, I get that some non Rainbows get stocked in lakes/streams they arent listed for, but I highly doubt PFBC dumped a whole truck of Brookies instead of Rainbows.

PFBC stocks 498,880 Rainbows in Commonwealth Lakes, and Brookies 93,940. Good chance a co-op or sportsmans club supplements.

Justus Lake in Venango use to get all 3, with only Brookies in November/Winter stocking.

Since PFBC cut cost, Justus is Rainbow only. Rainbow eggs are cheaper and easier to source (most come from a NC hatchery).

99% of our catch are bows. Few Brookie/Browns mixed in. Pre season truck is all Bows, cause Justus gets its own truck.

Now 2nd and 3rd stocking in May, is when you get some mixed fish, since those trucks stock mutliple waterbodies on same day. Come Nov/Winter Stocking Justus Lake gets its own truck, all bows again.

Brookies are pre-domiantly stream spawners, so unless the feeder creeks to these stocked lakes are good quality( hint, they arent), your not gonna get spawning success from all 3 species.

Lake Trout spawn in open water over rocks, but only place in PA you will find that is Lake Erie. Doubt there is much spawning success for Lake Trout in Raystown, and East Branch Clarion River Lake.

Sam I sure don't have an answer but I know if you say the fish are producing eggs and sporting full color it's certain the fish, are producing eggs and sporting full color.

Unless I'm mistaken it sounds like the lake is maintaining a healthy "non-stocked" population of Brook Trout which in my book says, spawning and survival is successful.

If that be the case, I hope the biologist leave the lake alone and allow, Mother Nature to take care if her own.

Without a doubt the pre and in season stocked fish would be showing spawning colors and females with egg mass, but they arent reproducing. Its 100% hatchery supported lake. If they dumped zero trout in KSP in 2019, very few if any holdovers from 2018 would make it past Summer months of 2019

btdt, John I don't think that KSP has producing Brookies or any other Trout. First of all any fry that were produced would have very poor survival  odds being a small body of water & so many predators. All that what I was saying was the state did stock the Brookies & Browns & that the Brookies were in full spawning mode. I did not get any Browns so I can't comment on that. I talked to several guys that were there & also a deputy fish warden who verified this. Also I watched 2 ospreys getting their dinner.  Cool !!!   sam

Sam I gotcha buddy, many fish go through the ritual without success but I bet those trout are beautiful this time of year.

PSU I fished for Brook Trout in the "Justus Lake" area when it was still a stream you could pisz across. Down stream you can find Reed and Runninger Runs, both produced some great Brookies in the day and it wasn't't uncommon to find sizable Brown's at times.

Heck, even if you didn't fish, those areas were beautiful to just hunt or hike in.

Then came Justus Lake where Tiger Musky, Bass, and Walleye could be caught and then came the biologist and their stupid trout and along came the trout stamp to fish the lake.

Couple years back, as in twenty plus years ago. When they determined anglers were not buying trout stamps because they had places like Justus to fish.

From the PFBC reports page today:

The district received its fall stockings of trout.  Keystone LakeNorthmoreland Lakeand the Loyalhanna Creek Keystone Select Stocked Trout Waters section have all received their allotments of fish. Because the fish were larger, two stocking trucks were necessary to complete the stocking. A large quantity of Brook Trout and Rainbow Trout were placed into all three bodies of water.

This year seems to be slower than the last for me too... But the nature in this state sure is nice. Makes me want to go there... Just grab my , a couple of fishing rods and relax... How is fishing there in general?
