Made a fatal mistake. Put 18 roma tomato plants, 6 zucchini, 6pickle cukes and 6 slicer tomatoes in the cold frame yesterday.
Stone cold dead this morning.
Snow expected tonight.
Mother always told me not to put frost sensitive plants outside before mother's day.
Man I wish I had that green house...
36 tomato plants left from my seed.

The last frost date for the mid Hudson region is May 18th.  You are really rolling the dice if you try to plant before that date.  As far as "hardening off" seedlings, that should be done in increments.  Start off with an hour outside and slowly build up over a few weeks.

I ran the tiller yesterday. Really glad I did as we got pounded with rain lastnight. Hopefully I get the plastic down this weekend and prepped. Maybe stick some plants in the ground in about 3 weeks or so. All depends on this bi-polar weather we have to deal with. 🙄

Re: The garden thread 2022/04/27 13:30:36 (permalink)
I tilled half the garden last week...planted lettuce, spinach and snow peas.  Had the entire garden turned over from the previous weekend with the shovel and then spread bone meal, compost and a bunch of bags of garden soil.  HD had it on sale last week.  5 bags for $10.  Topped off some of the flower beds with it too.  Cleaned out old potting soil from some of my veggie pots and flower pots, and put in new....threw the old soil in the garden.   Now, hoping to keep the blight at bay this year.....wasn't too bad, until pretty late last year.

Waiting to till the second half that I plant maters and peppers in....forgot to buy weed screen at HD and won't be planting those for another couple weeks anyways.  My small greenhouse down the road doesn't open until May 1st.

Planted some basil and parsley seeds to see if I can get lucky and get those to grow.  Haven't sprouted yet.

For the garlic growers, I planted 5 or 6 cloves that got old and started to sprout back in early November.  Growing decent now.  Should they be ready mid summer for picking?  Tried to look up when to pick and what I saw was, when half the leaves are green and half are brown/dead and low, about the time you should pick....Sound good?

Way behind on my gardening. So busy with fishing. I did plant flowers for the wife on Sunday.
My tomatoes are ginormous in the house trying to keep them going.
Beds aren't near ready.
Only things I've gotten in the ground are basil, green beans and garlic.
Hopefully others are far ahead in their garden.

Farming is doing ok.. pigs are self contained, cow is in freezer and chickens on the way.

9 more days or less on the water .. whew I need a vacation

I sprayed my fruit trees twice with neem before blossom.
I'm liking what I'm seeing.
Very way behind on vegetables.
Peppers and herbs are planted but the giant tomato plants are still waiting for the raised beds to be done.
Fishing was a huge distraction for a month.

My pigs and 14 day old meat birds are doing great and that's what the imminent focus has been.
This is my first weekend home since April 23rd so LOTS of chores to do, including that hole in the ground called a pool, lol.

Off to deer camp on our traditional memorial weekend of peace and solitude on a mountain. Still, it will be a work detail as we want to build a shooting shack for my youth hunter grandson.
Stay hydrated.
Peace and tuna

I'll finish up this weekend. I have to go to the greenhouse today for a few things. Everything is in besides some peppers and eggplants. I better because that Big Lake is calling me and as soon as she lays down, I'm gone.

Got it done. Swealterd in the brutal heat yesterday and this morning building 3 5x10 and 2 5x5 raised beds. It was a struggle just trying to level the ground, cut the lumber, line the boxes and fill the beautiful soil. No matter it's going to be well worth the effort. 36 tomato plants in and 4 pickle cukes planted.
Perfect timing as we got a nice dose of rain to help. Still some more vegetables to plant but it's very good knowing my staples are in.
Within that time, the pool is open and grandkids were swimming.
Chickens are going to make their way to the outdoor pen next week. They grow amazingly fast.

Way to go ht, I did the same except I only built 2- 3 x 15 beds and filled with tomatoes, peppers and some lemon cukes. Also got my bush beans, sweet corn, pumpkin, gourds and rhubarb planted. Next up the rest of the cucumbers, pole beans and some more potatoes.

Everything is in, finally. Mostly Bells, but did half dozen each on large Cayennes and Infernos. Dozen eggplant, few rows of beets n beans. Did my usually hills of pickles, cukes, zuchs, koosa and pumpkins. Over 80 tomatos, 6 kinds, but the lions share are plums. Onion sets are popping and the garlic is growing like crazy. I tried a pack of corn also. Guess I'll havta to wait and see with that. First time. It's next to the garlic patch. If it doesn't come up, I'll just add it to that space when it comes time for the second planting on the beans. Maybe monsoon season is over and we can get some growing weather? Let's hope for tha best.

You folks are doing great and WAY ahead of me.
Pretty much no free time here but at least we have our staple vegetables in. All the rest I will weekly shop for at the farm store.
Our chickens are ready to come out of the brooder and their tractor pen is ready but I won't be around this weekend so they have to wait until Monday so I can monitor them.

Heading to our deer camp on the mountain early Saturday morning to spend the weekend with my son and grandson.
Going to build him a shooting shack. 6x6x6 4feet off the ground.
Fun times.

Re: The garden thread 2022/05/28 07:16:31 (permalink)
We got a good dose of some much needed rain yesterday afternoon and overnight. Was starting to get worried we were heading into another June drought. It kinda seems the normal now with wet cold springs, drought June and wet mid to late summer.

My blueberries , peaches and apples are all producing well. Glad I took the time to spray them so we'll hopefully get a good harvest.
Garlic is growing off the charts. Gave them a boost of nitrogen for their final push and should produce some really nice bulbs again.
I think these are in their 6th year off the same strain of cloves. I did mix in a new strain last fall so well see how they do.
Chickens are huge already and pigs are starting to eat more food so their growing well.
Happy gardening folks.
I'm off to the high mountain

Re: The garden thread 2022/06/15 18:00:02 (permalink)
Oh Mary, Mary Quite Contrary how's everyone's farm and gardening going ?
Mine is poor. I well neglected my preparations and paying for it now.
While my tomato plants were large when I finally got them in , they've just kinda been stunted after.
Pepper look terribly weak and cukes are doing nothing since sprouting.
I don't run soil samples but have a feeling there is an issue.
After I sprayed my peaches with neem, they look horrible. Drying up and falling off along with leaves.
Apple trees are ok but the apples already look scabby.
This is not what I was hoping for in a time of record food prices. It's hitting my local farm stores in the way of rising costs of business.
Passing on a lot of things due to price increases.
Tough times ahead and it's not because of covid this go round.

On the bright side:
Garlic is doing fantastic as are the chickens and pigs. Did big improvements in preparations on that end so at least we still won't be buying meats for another year 🤞.
Be well and hunker down.

Re: The garden thread 2022/06/15 18:44:51 (permalink)
I give mine a 7 or 8. Garlic is great, as you said. All my vine stuff is doing good. Lettuce is growing like crazy and I keep picking and resowing about every 3 weeks. Peppers are decent as are the tomatoes. Just decent... after all the rain this month, those 2 crops are looking a little ragged. Yellow leaves on the tomatoes and the peppers look a little sickly. After 100° today, I'm sure they'll bounce right back 🙄😆. My eggplants are doing pretty good too, but like I said, this has probably been the wettest June on record. We will have to see. I'm gonna pick that garlic in about 3 or 4 weeks. I have all those scapes to clip before that. Maybe this weekend. 🤔 Good luck all.

Well that's encouraging to hear your in the 7-8 . I'd give mine a 3-4.
We're totally opposite here in northeast NY.
Almost drought stages. Haven't had any significant rain since second or 3rd week of may.
Been hot, sunny and breezy which dries the ground very quickly. Have to water daily.
Stream here and in the Adirondacks are low.
Supposed to get windy and some afternoon storms tomorrow as the cold front moves through then just dry again until next week.

I'm going to start another round of tomatoes from seed soon and plant in my garlic beds. Hopefully a good yield of tomatoes for fall to cann sauce.

Mine seems to be doing well, peppers are a little behind where I think the should be. Everything else is up to speed for this time of the year. Peas are just starting to be picked and we’ve gotten a few quarts of strawberries in the last couple of days. I‘ll have to get a picture in the next day or so

The fruit trees are mixed.

The peaches flowered right before 3 hard nights of frost, so there won’t be any this year. The Bartlett pear did the same — darn near killed the tree because the young leaves froze too. The other pears didn’t flower until after the last frost, so they have fruit on them.

The apples flowered after the frost, but only about half have fruit. I’m thinking the others simply did not get pollinated for some reason.

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

Mine aren’t giving me anything to eat yet, but look okay. I could probably pick the baby spinach, but don’t need it yet. My squash keeps sprouting small squash that rot. Not sure what the deal with that is. I have picked some herbs, but that is about it. Cukes don’t seem like they will be putting any Cukes on my table for a while.

Here's a few pictures of my paltry garden. Not all but some.
I have 4 tomato raised beds, 8 garlic beds, 1 cuke bed, 2 green beans beds, 2 pepper beds, various herbs and a few direct plants of zucchini. Not counting the trees.
Things improved but still way lacking.

On an upside.
I picked a garlic bulb.
Preimo in that department.
I'll start harvesting garlic starting July 4th and should continue through July.
