We got another nice rain last night and more expected every night. I love it when the rains come after dark and sun is out all day. Not much gardening done today but I do need to go pick more tomatoes and herbs sometime later. It was trees day. My buddy came at 7am and had all 6 trees dissected and useable firewood cut to length by 11 am. Cleanup is on me. This guy knows his stuff, not 1 piece or damage to the old wooden fence.

Those heavy rains did not happen....YET! Just checked the radar, all the heavy rain is south of me but may hit after dark,we'll see what happens, and a tropical depression is forming in the Atlantic, don't need that as the local folk are still cleaning up from the last one.

Got sauce ? Didn't take pic of last night's pick but was about the same. Updated, last night's pick is included. This is from today. I have 2 full size fridges for storage and both almost full. This fridge load is going to my son tomorrow. We will sauce ours on the usual Sunday gathering. Pigs come back tonight. My butcher is AWESOME !! Good people still exist today. The progress towards moving is going very slower than I wish. Tough getting people motivated and then they have to stop so I get 2hr segments in a full day which equals less than 6 hrs work. Anyway: Not going fishing anytime soon unless this heat breaks. Like others, I can't get motivated at 6 am to quit by 10am before its unbearable. Peace and tuna.

Oh boy. We just filled 2 freezers of my pigs and a cooler full of 60lbs slab bacon that needs to be cured. We currently own 4 freezers that are full of homegrown foods. 3 refrigerators with above freezers on top that are full. I'm starting to get very worried about the cow coming in September. Freezers are hard to find right now. These foods will take us through for an entire year. Only things we really need from a store would be minimal dry goods.

Lol. We try to share amoungst 17 mouths in my family. Everyone contributes something to the tables. Every once in awhile I have a shindig or two with live music and folks are welcomed. I got 3 out of 6 slabs cut and curing. I ran out of trays. 1 side is sectioned , sealed and frozen raw. 2 more to go. Going to pick up another freezer tomorrow. Haven't ventured into the garden today. I lots of red. Sunday's are sauce day. Delivered about 40 lbs tomatoes to my son today. Be well folks. Ps. I hear there are some salmon very close to the river mouth and bronzed up. Someday I'll fish again

Clint, Im so sick of picking tomatoes here and I'm just getting slightly past peak. We have 98 quarts canned. Tomorrow should put us about 130. Not counting the tomatoes I've given away its been an incredible harvest. Finished up adding cure to the bacon. Its gotta cure for 5 days then I will slice / package. Another glad it's over. Just put the week and half old batch of chicks out in pen with last week's batch. Give em food and water, slaughter in October. Went and bought a 15 cubic foot freezer today. Makes freezer #5 . I'll abandon one small 5 cubic freezer. I really can't wait for summer to end. Days are getting shorter even though temperatures still boiling. Won't be long. Speaking of salmon. If I can get my son and grandson to go fishing, I'd like to see folks on the river. I put an offer in on 248 acres in Richland 3 weeks ago but was turned down. My goal is still to hunt and fish my days in Oswego county.

Rich- lots of Deer in Richland and not all that many hunters. With so much land around they get spread IMHO.- Had my place there on 10 ac and took many a hike in the area- not to mention evening deer sighting rides. Lots of the Deer there migrate a bit as soon as the weather starts to change for Winter due to normal heavy snowfall. They dont go too far as from Pulaski to the Lake there is significantly less snowfall. As an in stater you can even get doe tags- as a POS outastater I never could- even owning land. Fin and fur sporting days were nice in the Fall. Good luck--

As gillz said sharing is caring. Let's see, 100 quarts divided by 3 families is not even a quart a week. We use sauce pretty much every week, chicken, pork, pasta and pizza. Last year we did 89 quarts and ran out in April between 2 families.

Awesome Clint. We got robbed by the deer on our beans and hopefully a fall harvest will fare better. I've been supporting our local growers on produce we lack. The corn has been fantastic, cantaloupe fabulous , peppers and onions great and they had a limited amount of great peaches. If produce has a sticker on it , I'm not interested. Getting way overwhelmed with projects. Tomatoes galore, chickens daily chores and the work nextdoor on the house renovation. Haven't mowed my lawn/ yard in 2 weeks. We have herd paths now. Thankfully there is help on the way. Our anticipated now move date is first week in October. By then I'll be starting fall harvests and winterzation projects . Life is good though, family is happy and healthy . Someday I'll fish again.

Ok. After tonight and this weekend, I'm done with sauce. Getting tired of processing tomatoes. We are grinding raw sauce and pulp to freeze because we cant keep up with the simmer and cann. So far I filled 8 gallon freezer bags. This is still just tonight's pick and plenty more on the vine. Ugh... The free tomatoes sign goes up Saturday..

haha....just did my first batch last night of italian stewed tomatoes. Only did 7 qts. and that is enough for me for one day, while also working from home and running my daughter to volleyball practice in the AM and my son to soccer practice in the PM. I have one, nice big stainless steel pot that I know if I fill to the brim, will yield 7 qts and that is all the pressure canner can fit so works out nicely. My maters are coming in hot and heavy so I'll probably need to do this every 2 or 3 days to keep pace. Tough for me to keep up with 12 mater plants, don't know how you do it! Another dek hockey tourney starts tonight so I may not get out there to pick beans....planted late, and only enough to get a few meals but they are ready now...

Go big or go home. The final push for sauce will be this weekend. I ran 9 gallons, yes GALLONS, through the jucier machine last night and put in freezer from since sunday - tues pick.. I just put Tues & wed pick in fridge. Tonight's pick was small. All picks from here on will be. Salsa and free. Peppers are doing great also but beans not so. My only future garden plans are for garlic planting in October. Thank goodness its slowing down with busy work. Chickens are self sufficient at this point and harvest early October.

Finally getting the lion's share of peppers and tomatoes done up today. No where near the volume that HT has, but it'll be enough to get us through, without using any store bought stuff. This was a great thread. Tons of useful knowledge and good tips. Thanks again to all.

I enjoy the memories this forum brings back. Really great how FishUSA allows discussion of topics beyond fishing. 👍
Might add, seeing and hearing the success of HT, Clint, and others, does make me a tad bit jealous.🤫

That's great Pen, I enjoy gardening and my small little livestock puttering. It's very rewarding and important that we know where our meals come from. It tastes better and sure cuts on buying from a grocery store. Since its Sunday, it's sauce day. This batch should put us close to 150 quarts and I still have 10 gallons raw sauce frozen. The tomatoes are still coming and from this point, I will give away free and raw sauce/ freeze what's left. I made 8 pints of salsa yesterday. Working on the house is getting weary with so much yet to do. Hopefully help arrives next week. We are basically rebuilding an entire house and need to be in before cold arrives, ugh. So this is my seed garlic hanging. Should be about 200 plants. I need to build new box beds before October because we are moving location. Our daily use garlic is hanging in braids and in this dish strainer. Some things I've learned. 1. Until I get my fruit and vegetables stand going, I don't need 88 tomato plants. 50 seemed about right. 2. Don't sell garlic during a pandemic and wish you had more. We will surely run out of homegrown cook garlic. 3. Instead of having 5 smallish ( 5-8 cubic freezers) eliminate 3 and buy a 15 cubic foot one. 4. Setup a hydroponic system like TB for my peppers and greens. 5. Sometimes its important to take time off and go FISHING !! Once this weather breaks in mid October, all my time will be spent in the woods pursuing deer. We are going to camp labor day weekend to check trail cameras, ride atvs and set up some live feed wifi cameras. Once Columbus weekend, I will be in woods every weekend until Thanksgiving weekend. We pull the plug after that and prepare for ICE FISHING.. I know rg says don't count your chickens before they hatch but we obviously count our venison and freezer space. Be well. Peace and tuna.

Tonight's pick will be donated to cardinal hall program tomorrow that will provide and serve food to people in need. Disabled, elderly and just plain folks that can't afford some things. This will be how all many of our labors of love will be dispensed from here on. We will also donate canned foods and meats as needed. Sometimes it feels good to turn off the news and build a garden.

Did 28 jars of spaghetti sauce yesterday. That gives us 47 for the season so far and should be enough for the wife and I until this time next year. Next up a few dozen jars of pizza sauce then salsa and depending on the jar situation maybe some more sauce. My tomatoes are just turning on so I’ll be giving them away also.
