Roll call!

Everybody present? I hope! Just saw someone went through the ice at Moraine State Park. Hate to hear this stuff. Didn't think the ice would be thick enough to walk on yet.

Come on people.  Be smart out there.  I get the "don't want to wear life vest" drownings each year, because wearing those can suck.  But this one is senseless.  Nobody could have thought that ice was okay this early.  That's a shame.  Thoughts for the lost angler and his family.

wasnt me. Always surprises me how quick the ice forms, even more surprised by how early people are willing to get out on it. I drove out to Brady's Run on 13th to watch them stock trout and a lot of it was iced over(bout 25 degrees), then it got real cold for a cpl days(10-13 degrees at 6am), didn't make it back out to see if it iced all the way before it just warmed up. There was like 3 people there trying to catch trout from shore in the little bit of open water by the spillway, I didn't see anyone get one. River had some super thin ice in Fallston except right in the middle at end of cold snap few days ago, but it's really shallow there. I could see it just driving over the new Fallston-Bridgewater bridge

I've never fished on the ice, and don't ever see that changing.  Really sad to see this, especially a week before Christmas.

    From the Butler Eagle:

FRANKLIN TWP — Emergency crews have recovered the body of a fisherman who fell through the ice on Lake Arthur near the Route 528 boat launch at Moraine State Park Monday morning.
Pierre C. Niesen Jr., 71, from the Pittsburgh area died of drowning and hypothermia, said William Young III, Butler County coroner, Monday night.

A park visitor called 911 about 10 a.m. after reportedly seeing someone in distress in the lake about 60 yards from an access road.
“The caller just saw an arm waving,” Park Manager Dustin Drew said.
Park officials got there and found fishing gear near a hole in the water. There was no sign of the man.
Drew estimate the water depth at the site to be 8 feet and the temperature about 32 degrees.

When looking at the upcoming forecast of 50s, I was going to ask if anyone thought Arthur would have any open water next week.  When I saw a post on that thread, I was thinking someone had a report.  I didn't think anyone would have been trying to ice fish yet.  Glad to hear it wasn't a kid with their whole life ahead of them.  Not to minimize the loss of a guy in his early 70s.  But, most likely died doing something he loved and should have known better.

I'm no ice fisherman, but we've all made some bad or somewhat risky decisions while outdoors over the years , this was way over the common sense limit. Just too much thin black ice on all our local lakes yet. It's too bad he made a dangerous bad decision that cost him his life. Too bad the ice didn't break apart on his first step or two. Condolences to his family and friends.

We were stocking stock on Laurel Hill Lake one December day and there was 3 guys out on the ice.  The ranger was there and made them get off.  The ice was not very thick.   At least they took the rangers advice and got off.

The only thing better than 1 day of fishing is 2 days of fishing.

Bigfoot here, still high and dry.
