oct 3/4/5/6

Great trip cept for 2 real bad meals at 2 different places way upriver.
One burger salted to  death and second deep fried fish- didn't get to eat for over a day after the fish.
Hard fishing all the next day with no food and a bad stomach and poor, if any, sleep.
Gotta be just my luck- other wise they would both be outa business.
At the one where I ordered a burger it was an 11$ bill -gave the waitress a 20 and she asked if I wanted change.
Was nice and polite and never complained at either place- wont be back to either --ever- oh yea she did NOT get a 9$ tip- yes a tip  - not her fault the 'cook' took it upon himself to ruin a lousy burger but wanting $9--nuts.
Will eat in Pulaski from now on.

OH YEA, FISHING-
GREAT trip. Hos galore days one two and three.
As soon as I went down to 8 lb test and little hot pink or red egg flies in about number 8 and dangled them very close they cooperated.
CAUGHT  a number of them from bout 6 to 12 lbs.
Lots of Kings everywhere and few deads yet.
Kings understandably line shy with the conga lines all over.
Hos would hold a bit and give you a chance now and then though-great.
Was way under rigged for Kings and didn't bother with them till today when the number of Hos dropped.
Fished mid upper around the vines.
Gotta walk a bit to get away from crowds and still a lot of people- they tend to clear out when the kings slow mid day and it makes a decent time to FISH  if ya know the right rocks and little pockets.
Only saw 4 Steel in 4 days- hope they pick up.
Snaggers aren't even getting them- only saw two on a stringer.

A really decent run going on- not epic- not better that 2012 - but a darned nice run of fish.
Ya hear stories, but, repeatedly heard they are still getting numbers out in front on the lake-
Could really turn into  something if they keep on coming.

Hey Rich- never went up top for Kings with the Hos around.
Would love to FISH for them.
Glad to year ya had a great time.

PS--The Hos were not going outa their way to hit.
Had to put it right in front of them -sometimes repeatedly.
Cool when ya can see them and watch them bite it.
Fishing from well above them works good for holding your thingie in front of them for a bit- also lessens the chance of a foul.

I was up, mostly on the hill, last week to leaf peep and brook trout fish with my wife.  We ate the first night at the Altmar Hotel, and I had the worst meal I have ever had there.  My wife would not go back on Wednesday and Thursday night.  We got subs at the Richland Nice and Easy for Wednesday, and then had a great meal at the Gathering Place on County Route 17, north of Redfield, on Thursday.  It would be a long drive from the SR, ~20 miles, but the food was great and reasonable they are open 7 until 7 Tuesday through Friday, but close after lunch on Saturday and Sunday and don't open on Monday and Tuesday. I think most of the Clown Town Restaurants are adopting the "kill them with krap, they'll be gone in a day or so anyway" policy for the fishheads, and the locals know better than to go out to eat during salmon season, or drive to Oswego or up toward Watertown.  And Artie's has always been good, but I think he's only open for Breakfast and Lunch.

Glad  you had fun, T.  I had one GREAT day, will be back later in the  month. I bring a cooler and a stove. We do lots of backpacking and camping, no need to be different near the river. Last year we went to Watertown to eat. I've gotten deathly sick TWICE near the river. The heck with that.
I found one pod of Ho's, but my arms were toast from the Kings at that point.  In the morning of my one day I had 100 yds. of river and one of the best places to swing flies on the river to myself. More good memories made. Not 2012, but a good one nonetheless. Prayin'- taking TWO knees  _ for the hopes of steel.  I won't turn down some late ho's. Just got back from fall vacation. I caught enough schoolie stripers on the fly to fill the back of a pick-up.  Not often I  get to stand in the middle of blitzes and have bait  and chasing stripers underneath my rod. Had a  darn good week.  Glad the fishing was good for you, even if the food certainly was not.

Nice to hear ya hit the Stripers Fichy.
Despite thinking about it haven't hit the Salt in a few years- live close too.
    Perhaps next year.
Being in a feeding frenzy is a most memorable experience- they are NUTS.
Kinda thought I'd get my head chewed off with the bad food report.
    Seems I wasn't alone.
Ate out up there many times over the years and often with  family while we had the place up there for a long time-never had the bad eats of late.
They have some real nice breakfast places in town and aside from that I'll stick with the chain stores.
Agree with Lucky though bout the good grinders at the Richland store.
My place was just down the road and went there often for them.
Am really thinking bout an early November trip and also hoping for Steel.
Nov was always a preferred time for me.
Some times ya can find everything the river has to offer then---sometimes.

Thanks r3 sounds like a sandwich worth trying when it gets to my little piece of Penn's Woods. Likely the only way I'll see any venison on my table this season.

I enjoy the FISH FLATBREAD sammidges. 'bout the only fish sammidge I will eat. Of course the beef is also good so I shall keep an eye open for the venison. Now if Arby's would just deliver in my area. What a joy it would be, munching on a good sammidge, bow at my side swinging my feet in a tree.

Where is it RG?  I blow through town and don't pay much attention.
Jack,  I'll be up on the 19th fishing with Wayne and his Dad. Hope we'll share some water. When I get around to it, I'll put up a good pic Nancy took of you fighting one.  I hope some  more of them browns that Bear got in to  are  heading in.

Figure on coming up  in a week or so- number of fish don't have an impact on that- just wanna go up.
Have a question on steel though.
Last week they were VERY few and far between- even with all the egg wagons around.
Now that Kings are about finished shops and some folks mention Steel most every day.
    Hype or good fishing ???

Yea- don't take much to beat the past couple of Steel seasons but am I reading about decent steel or just a couple here or there being made to look pretty GOOD??
I mean- in the olden days ya could catchem along with the Kings and Hos.
This afterwards stuff has me wondering.
Is this a poor showing being made into something it aint???
Or actually a decent showing ??
I'm coming anyhoo so pls be accurate if ya have the good skinny----

From my very limited point of view I have seen fewer than normal for the number of eggs in the system.  Last year was bad and this year may be the same. Water may be a little warm too. EVERYONE takes pics of steel..............

If I had to venture a guess, I would say it's yet to be determined. DSR has better steel activity and they seem to want to keep the truth in bounds, this year.  Water is still a bit warm, and if some did go up river, there's so much food in the system, it would be harder to get them to take an artificial.  Steel are harder to snag than salmon (thank God). I don't think we'll know until the salmon  are all  a herd of dead and dying  zebras and the eddys are a bit...mushy. I'll go with Clint on the side of lower numbers, just not as bad as last year.  RG, I'd ask Dime by PM  for some down low info.

From what I have seen so far my guess is a slightly below average year with fewer large fish with mostly 6-8LBers making up the run.
No idea why I think that.

Just got in after a couple of days up there.
People are down a bit but upper river still has fisher folks around in good numbers.
For some reason though Kiddie seems to have lost its appeal this year-even on the parking lot side- few guys there either of my trips this year.
Not that I fished it as I skipped the Zones on both trips. Imagine they are likely stacked up there.
Likely a big mistake on my part.
Kinda compare the past two days with the past two years fishing upriver.
Some fish around if ya worked for them and walked a LOT, but not too many willing to bite anything.
Steel -yes- even fought 2--they won. They are, however, NOT in huge numbers, but here and there.
Dead kings from the past runs, but not as many as I expected to see.
There are a few new ones hanging around trying to breed  but scared to death of coming out of their hide outs- only saw one active bed in both days.
Occasional one or two still running.
Saw deads up behind Schoolhouse that had eggs strewn all about the area they were rotting in. Guess they never got to nest for some reason. Don't recall ever seeing that so much in the past. On deads in the Vines and lower didn't notice the eggs.
Am done till next time around but will stick with this being a good year but not EPIC as some were saying earlier- and certainly NOT better than the big runs of a few years back- none the less a good season.
Wish I had gone up earlier rather than later but am very satisfied with my trips.
Did put a King on shore this am.
Chuckers and duckers are taking Kings but working to do it.

Good report, RG. Kinda makes me bittersweet. I was going to go Thursday, but I was advised not to. Work is out of hand, so I chose to not get further behind.  Had I fished alone, I was going to walk Pineville down and  poke about on a long hike. Not to be. Glad you banked one and got some steel on, too.

Don't think ya missed much other than a nice walk Charlie.
Got  exceptionally lucky IMHO with the two I lost, both were in a little slot that I kept coming back to over a few hours and fishing over and over.
That's more work than fun sometimes. lol
The second may well have been fouled and was off very fast.
In that lower mid there may well have been areas where you were quite alone here and there though.
