Cooler Than Average August Called For

So today I've been seeing countless articles calling for cooler than average temperatures in August, along with more rain than usual. At first, didn't think much of it, but then I looked at what time of year it is, with football and chrome fishing right around the corner. And, seeing as how things were behind schedule last year due to the lake temperature staying warmer than usual later, it began to make me think how this could fire up the early chrome run. Anybody's thoughts??

In my opinion, everything is early this year. That goes way beyond just fishing. I wouldnt be surprised if September came in August. September is, on average, the wettest month of the year. So maybe the chrome gods will send them up the criks early.

Due toooo old timers I can't recall the exact year, maybe 10-12 years ago, I remember I80 being shut down between Dubois & Clearfield, in the middle of October, because of snow.

Also, recently sold my snowblower and not replaced it. You know it's gonna be a long cold snowy winter.

Hope your Chrome dreams come true and tight lines.

It's hard to say they can't even predict the weather a week ahead without changing it.
It would be nice if everything came together and they started to run early, have to wait and see.

I expect a very hard winter so I am worried about my firewood supply.Once that is stacked up I  will think about steel.
Its been a strange year and anything can happen I have learned to go with the flow...tough to predict.WCW

BTDT, I believe that was 2002, not sure though. Had our last 8th grade football game canceled as a result.

Dont know about the winter, as I recall last year, they were calling for a brutal winter, only for it to be unseasonably warm to the extent that my favorite ice fishing lake here in Central PA had about four days of safe ice.

Fall is definitely getting into the air, had a bass tournament on Saturday at Raystown, got up around 4 AM, could see my breath, and actually had to wear a hoodie for much of the day. Ended up taking 5th and finishing in the money, guessing about 75% of the bass weighed in were smallies, usually a big sign that things are cooling down there.

Definitely getting fired up for chrome and starting to tie some flies.

John I spent so many winters sliding down Clearfield or off of Snow Shoe, one year just runs into another.

My favorite year was when PennDot had road graders on Snow Shoe busting the thick layers of packed snow with scarifier teeth.

    That may have been 2002.

Ahh... Those were the days. 😬

Definitely a few good signs. NOAA said that the water temp off Erie is down to 69 this morning, which it didn't get to last year until October.

Glad to hear it, hopefully we have a nice, cold fall and a frigid ice-filled Winter! As of half an hour ago, the nearshore buoy off the peninsula was reading 70.9°. Hopefully it's down in the 50's by the end of October this season.

Just keep an eye out for water spouts.  They're common this time of year.  Warm lake surface temps mixed with cold air can get those funnels going.  September and October are the 2 most common months for them.

Rumor has it that a few waterspouts have occurred in the past day or so.

Anyway, the gauges are making me smile right now. If this and the cool temperatures dont get some fish running, I don't know what will.

For the record, the new flow gauge numbers are going to need re-learned from personal knowledge/observation ..the new gauge is reading quite lower (or old one was quite higher) than physical observations.

4.14 ft 112cfs and a 44.4 turbidity reading for walnut was somewhat higher, faster and dirtier than previous observations that i have done previous years.. i have blown out creek conditions written down on paper. But just keep that in mind. I know everyone has favorite water conditions but just trying to help.

I figure the run will be good this year. I hope the cold weather holds out and more rain moves in from the hurricanes
