Somerset Lake draining

Any one know when they will start draining Somerset Lake for the new spill way construction?

I hear you mm.  Haven't fished that lake in several years.  Didn't think I could launch my boat very easy.  Probably won't be any good fishing for a long time until it comes back.

In case anyone cares the fish recovery at Somerset Lake is to be done 10-24 and 10-25 I believe.  The last I saw it was to start at 10:00. I watched the one at Donegal last year and enjoyed it of you have the time

It probably would be a good idea to call the Commission in Somerset to confirm the info before driving to far.

I heard it was 10/24.  Are you going?  Let me know if you find out for sure what day and time.  I would like to come up and watch.   Thanks
How much water is in the lake now?

george:  I'm pretty confident of the info but didn't want anyone mad if I had something wrong with the date or time.

I stopped up yesterday at the main boat launch and the water went down at least as far as the cove that had the osprey nest in it.  I could see a lot of carp tails out from where the boats were tied up when people left their boats there so it must be pretty shallow there.

When I drove down the road where the office is there were workman making  plank walkways which are what they used at Donegal.  It looks like they made a road heading up to the breast so the fish tank truck could get up there.   If you come I'd guess park as near to the breast as you can and sit on the stone at the breast to watch.

At Donegal they had volunteers make a bucket brigade to pass the fish from man to man up the hill.  If your physically able I'm sure they could use help.   If they do it like Donegal they will probably pull the plug at the end of this week and drain it down to a small pool near the dam.

When I was trailertrucking the PA. greenstamp I would see the signs for Donegal (just loved that hill(WB)) and Somerset.

Now I read about those lakes being drained. Sure hope the situation doesn't turn out like our little Tamarack Lake here in NW PA. Drained for repairs, a second time, in 2012 and though money was allocated for those 2nd repairs, we still wait to see any sign of work.

Not to fret we're told, the dozers are on the way.

    Good luck Donegal and Somerset.

FYI if interested in the Tamarack story.

Hey, B.T not to side track you guys but that dam hill you love, came up that hill, east bound and almost down, top the hill started down blew the motor and had to head for the shoulder. As I was climbing out of the tractor Smokey pulled and yelled " Driver where you going?" My reply was " I have 40,000+ lbs of toilet paper in this box and I need every roll!" Still get nervous Everytime I go pass there! Five hours later the Hook showed up.

Haaa ha Jigs, that's why I noted WB. EB super sucked on the Donegal. Not a good place to bust a clamp and blow a turbo hose. Not!

WB was cool pulling a set of pups, through those squirrely curves, on the way down... nothing like Georgia Overdrive 10-4?

Still a shame about the lakes but I guess better to be safe than sorry. Hopefully PFBC Engineering has plans completed and in place to get-r-done.

Maybe a lot less red tape than Tamarack will expedite the work also.

Best wishes for those who enjoyed the lakes out there on the big hill.

How long did it take to complete the fish removal at Donegal?   It is going to rain Tuesday, but I guess they will remove fish rain or shine.

It's scheduled for up to 3 days I guess depending on weather and conditions.  On Thursday they put 2 devices to catch fish across the secondary thing they use to raise and lower the lake.  I'm assuming that means they are ready to pull the plug.  If I get a chance I'll drive by today.

Where I thought they were building a road they used that to haul the equipment below the dam.  You can walk around the lake fairly well now.  The part they lowered last month dried out pretty well.  I wore hip boots but as long as I stayed where the mud was dried and cracked I had no trouble even walking even with a cane.   I doubt if I'd try to walk in the newly lowered area unless I had some help along.

There is very little water coming through today.  I'd guess the lake only came down a couple of inches since Thursday.  Doubt if they will pull the plug till Monday morning when the work crews come back.

It looks like they took a couple of dozers and made a rock road across the face of the dam below the old dam rocks.  It'a about a 45 degree angle and I'm wondering if they aren't going to drive the hatchery trucks across the dam face then proceed to the other side so there is no backing up required?  Looks a little steep to me.

BTDT:   Both lakes are probably finished for my lifetime.  I'm lucky that I have a private lake filled with nice panfish within 10 miles  of my house and a permit to put my boat on it.

Davef good you have somewhere to wet a line. Safety is utmost when dealing with our man made lakes and reservoirs. Still a shame, why it takes so long to correct the problem. Our little lake here in NW PA was tied up in red tape and had it not been for a group of individuals remaining vigil I think the project would have gone by the wayside. Drained in 2012, for a second time no less, the friends of Tamarack learned this month, work will begin immediately.

Hope I can fish her waters a few more times, just for, old times sake.

Went to watch the fish salvage today at Somerset Lake.  They removed tons of fish.  Most everyone there was surprised to see how big some of the bass and walleye were.   A lot of nice fish.    I didn't see many muskie or pike.   The panfish were generally all small.  One small bass I saw had a blue gill in its mouth.   How can they digest a fish about half as big as it is.   They transported the fish to 4 different lakes.   Shawnee Lake, Quemahoning Dam,  Glade Run and Loyalhanna Lake were getting the fish.
    Was something different to see.

I think they pretty much got most of the fish out yesterday.   There is probably still enough fish left in there to salvage them again today.

George:   There is a lot more fish in there than you think.  They lowered the lake about 18 inches over night and started at 9:00 this morning.  They are still hauling walleyes out left and right as of 11:30.  The paper said they collected about 1000 fish yesterday and they were estimating about 10,000 yet to go.

If you go dress warm.  The cold wind was ripping over the top of the dam.

I hear you.  The wind was ripping across the spillway yesterday too.   Did they take any more fish out below the spill way?  They got a bunch out of there yesterday.   I heard one guy say where was those big walleye when he was fishing for them.
The water left in the lake can only be 2 feet deep by now.

I didn't stay after 11:30 but they were planning on shocking the stream again.  They were letting a lot of water run through when I left so I would bet there were more walleyes in the stream.

The water was almost up to the tops of the barriers in the stream.

The lake is probably down to a level of about 8 to 10 inches and they are mainly getting catfish and carp now.  They said they will probably remove the three remaining logs today and hopefully finish tomorrow.  At 1:00 there were hundreds of fish backs showing above the dam and they were netting from the stream below which looked to be pretty full.

They did bring out a muskie that was measured at 47 inches and 28 pounds around noon time.   All in all very interesting to watch.

According to a fish commissioner I talked to on Tuesday they were not going to lower the dam any more.  Anyway, that's a lot fish left in there.

Wonder what they will do with the carp.  Fertilizer?   lol

That's a nice muskie.   Some of the bass I saw were at least 6 lb and some walleyes about that big.

Was interesting to watch.  Never saw them shock fish before.

I think Shawnee got most of them and I know they were going to the Quemahoning Dam and Loyalhanna and I think I heard them say the largemouth were going to Glade Run Lake.

They did net a Northern Pike today that was about 20 inches.  The warden for this area said that was the first one he saw from there in years.

For the carp, gizzard shad and golden shiners they were taking them in the woods and burying them in a pit.

Still a couple dozen fish in the puddle. Probably all carp or catfish. I guess they're to clean the stream out again today quick then it's all over. Apparently a few walleye around 10 or 11 pounds came out and went to quemahoning.

Surprising how many fish and how many nice fish came out of there.   All I heard was they were taking the bass too Glade Run.  They also said they were going to put some walleye in Shawnee.
They are supposed to fill the lake back up to where the grass was planted to stop erosion.   They will need a lot of rain because not much water comes in to Somerset Lake.
