Boat Help

I have a 9.9 Murc on my boat. It has a 0459 4 blade propeller. Can I change the propeller to get more speed? Right now I get to 6.50mph. Thanks for all your help in advance.

    Its a crestliner, canadian 16'  I would like to get to 10mph. Also I heard something about carb changes. Will that help as well?

    hsimmons your best bet is to talk to a certified mechanic. You start making prop changes engine RPMs are affected. You can load the engine preventing top performance or you can cause the engine to run against the limiter.

    The carb modifications could very well be possible as it is on many other mfg. OMC, at one time could be modified and changed the 9.9 to a 15 horse but, many who converted thier engine didnt do the prop which resulted in little difference of operation.

    Seriously, save your pennies till ya can afford a 20 horse. Buddy of mine with a boat similar to yours barely did 7mph with a 9.9 merc. Installed a 20 horse and now does a 18mph. zoom zoom.


    PS. Congrats on the Canadian, nice boat. Not that I'm partial to Crestliner, mind ya.

    Thanks BTDT, I priced a 20 hp, $4500. Thats more than the boat but if you need to get to your spots, we know how that goes.

    I hear ya neighbor but 3600. sounds like a better deal.

    Of course I don't have a 20 horse either. lol.

    My 18hp pushes my 19FS right around 7.5mph with a couple of moose on board.  You can get 15/18/20s used in the 1-2K range if you watch craigslist.  Paid $1200 for my 18.  Or if that's your only engine and you really want some speed go out to West Penn and get one of those re-stickered Evinrudes.  He usually has at least one or two 28/30hp sitting around.  
     
    Not sure why everyone is in a hurry to get to their spot though.  Years putting around on a pontoon taught me patience.  Our lakes aren't that big around here.

    Zelie, you are right. Spent most of my life meeting deadlines, and now I just need to slow down.       but I am 66 now and time is not on my side. One thing I learned about Pymi is if they are biteing you have to get there asap because 15 min latter its over. Thanks again guys and good luck on the lakes.

    Is that with the side console and floor boards? I was thinking to try and invest in a 20hp for my 17' Grumman. Like noted, the motor was more than I paid for the boat... Doing a ton of research and asking around on this and many boating boards, the best that I could come up with was "it might get you on plane"... Most likely won't get me on plane with others and gear. What good is that??? Getting on plane is difference of under 10mph barging and 18mph cruising. Not much difference if my boat is just me and gear(9-10 mph). With a partner (7-8mph) and about 6-7mph with a third. Not noticeable at all going from spot to spot. When on my 12'er, by myself with 7.5hp, I can get on plane and noticeable difference.
