gulp minnows
Love them things. So do Trout ,Bullgills, & Crappie. Yesterday I got about 1 doz. fish per minnow & the last one was still good. I see no reason to use live minnows most of the time. If I could only stop the jars from leaking. Now that this cold front hit again I can finally get out for Trout since the week before Trout season opened. I hope everyone is having as good a time as I am. sam

Love me some gulp minnows, the smaller ones slay trout and panfish and the larger ones work great on walleye and bass. Can't go wrong

Thread them on a small jig head, like a 1/64. I've caught trout, crappie, huge gills, bass, and even bay perch. My last trip to Erie the minnow bucket was thinning out in the afternoon (14 dozen between 3 of us) so I tried those little 1" emeralds shinners in the jar. They work well. Just kept jigging them. I have caught buckets of crappie and gills on 2-3 minnows all day. They are very durable and tough. Never used the bag ones,I always bought them in the jar with liquid in it. I don't like the lids on the jar because they leak and then they dry up and are useless.

The ones in the bag dry up once they are open if not used in a few months / leak very easy. Nice for the pocket fishermen.

I bought a couple small waterproof containers at family Dollar and use to dump my jars of minnows into them never leaked even in my vest pocket! Also kept them in the frig when not fishing, liquid stayed good and minnows never dryed out, kept some for 3 years. Those containers I bought were only a buck and had a gasket on the cover and snapped to lock.

I did the same thing. I crush trout in rivers with them. Way less messy and not nearly as expensive as live minnows, plus they are easier to transport. I thread them on a jighead and toss them out with no weight. Works wonder in swift water. Usually 7-8 fish per little minnow.

I've never used them a lot, but have some had good results with Trout and Bass on occasions. I'm kind of new to using them. Do you guys think it's the scent or just the imitation look ? How about the Gulp spray scents anybody have any input ?

I can't say for sure that any scent works effectively but that's just from personal expierence. I think the imitation works. On a jig head you can twitch them as if they are wounded minnows, easy prey makes for an easy catch.

I'm no great believer in bait scents, but I watched a guy just crush the Steelhead one day on Elk putting drops of scent on a glo bug. I mean this guy caught 10 to everybody's one ! Wasn't the color either we had the same. I managed to order the secret fish pheromone scent he was using that day and I never had a bump on that stuff! Tried it many a time...nothing. Smelled like cat urine is the best description ! I tossed it at the end of the season !....lol

Think its both, however when the actions slows sometimes a fresh gulp minnow heats things back? I soak a lot of my panfish plastics in the juice. In my mind it makes a difference. PT2

I mostly use the gulp alive 1" minnow from a jar & use them several different ways depending of the mood of the fish. If they are active, I use them on a trout magnet jig head,if they are not active, I will use them nose hooked on a long shaft light hook only, this allows for a much slower fluttering fall which most fish like. Also I like to put some of the juice on my hands as well,to cover the smell or taste of my Red Man chew. It seems to help. Also while using the set up for a while I will dip the minnow back in the juice to freshen it up. When I am done using the minnow, I often put it back in the jar to use it again. It seems like it heals itself after few hours. sam

I do the same with the 1"ers. & work good with a float with a wiggle/jiggle twitch. U mean all the bait sold in snuff cans don't catch fish??? How 'bout worms that were in coffee grinds??? Just wonderin'... crappy Headin' up Pymy for the week for some crappy action. Son caught a limit ov nice ones in less than 90 min. this afternoon.

Crappy, I always wondered about those snuff cans also. Do you think maybe we would have caught more with clean containers ? I have thrown small pieces of tobacco to fish & seen them spit it out almost immediately many times. I think that is why some people think that gasoline smell from your hands after filling up your tank repels fish also. I think that this requires more research,so I will go for Crappie again tomorrow. sam

Dump gasoline in the water and watch all wildlife disappear. There might be a tad bit of truth to the gasoline myth lol good luck tomorrow.

I'll second (or 3rd/4th) the use of another spill proof container. You can put every color in one container, they do not leak their color like most plastics do. They are made of some sort of biodegradable sponge substance that holds the color, so they hold the juice much better than dipping a plastic worm in the juice. I love them, certain times of the year and species, they work better than live fat heads. Other times, they won't touch them, but hammer the fat heads. Great to have when fishing with kids, and don't have to re-bait for them every cast, but still catch plenty of fish. Check online for rebates too. Constantly running rebates on them. You can end up getting a dozen for less than a dozen minnows, and catch 10 fish to 1 as noted. Like most, I use the 1/64 or 1/32 jig heads and bobber. I've also done well drop shooting them. FYI - If they dry out, soak them in a cup of water. They'll be usable after a 2 day soak. You can then put them back in your larger container of juice.

I quickly realized that I needed a better container for them. For such a great product from a big company you'd think Berkley would invest in a better container design IMO

I have never used the big containers, just the little ones like powerbait comes in, and I haven't had a problem. I bought a "bag" of 1-1/2" and just put them in the little jar after I opened them. Good to know about the bigger sized jars though. We use them with the kids, absolute stocked trout/crappie/gill slayers. I imagine the bigger ones jigged on the rivers would produce some serious walleyes(wheels turning...). Way easier, and cheaper, than buying minnows. I have to say the the trout magnets/crappie magnets jigged through a float have really sold me this year. Dumbest looking product in the world. I had the best morning of my life panfishing (50 crappie) in 3 hours the Saturday before Easter. 10 of those fish were in the 11-13 inch range, most were 8-10 inch, with a few dinks. That might not be very impressive for you panfish gurus, but I am kind of a virgin to this kind of fishing, and I had a blast. Kayak/6wt/crappie magnets/4x floro/flood control dam. Super sleezy. Super fun. Total believer now. I can see why you guys get into the panfishing. Took the kids out last night, set up the spin rod and a fly rod with a similar set up fishing from shore at the same place, and they caught a stringer full of very nice gills, and quite a few throw back 8" crappie. I don't mind filleting gills when they start to get so big that they have that "enlarged forehead" look, haha. Going to FEAST. Fair warning, I might change my name on here to "crappie magnet believer."

I started using the Lelands Lures when they first came out, shipped in a plain white box. I used to be a fan of the jig heads but I feel as if they are cheaper made now. They break after 1-2 fish for me if I use my hemostats on them. I prefer to pour a custom jig now. 1/50 oz and I can paint them whatever color I like. The lure bodies though are still just as deadly.

Those Barry Bonds bluegills are good eats! Weird looking things, but tasty. I used to be 99% C&R about 10 years ago. Heck, it took me maybe 2-3 years after that to keep a bluegill... After you get used to that sleezy feel, and a few fish fries, you'll be just fine with a few hours of slamming and bonking those things, rather than chasing "real fish" (and not catching). Granted, I'd much rather do that with perch or crappie, but have been known to slay some gills, especially when kids are involved and looking for a fish fry after. I actually prefer the 9"-11" crappie over the 12"+. If they get too thick, the meat doesn't seem to fry up as well, and less breading/fish ratio... Talk about sleezy. Granted, catching the 12"+ are more fun. I tried those trout magnets once about 15 years ago, and nothing. I can't lower myself to that level... Ha, ha. I'll likely pick up a pack before my next trip.
