Wild Rainbow?
My son caught this troot Saturday on the DHALO section of the Loyalhanna. Don't remember ever really seeing a stocked rainbow with these sort of distinct parr marks, but then again maybe I don't pay enough attention. Got me to thinking it might be a wild one. I've caught very small wild bows in the headwaters of a trib to the Loyalhanna years ago so I know they're in the watershed. Whatchya think, a wild bow or just some cool coloration on a pellet-head?

Don't know, but thanks for making me look up 'parr marks' and learn something!

Nope. Stream breed rainbows typically have red on the adipose fin and white tips on the pelvic fins.

possible but unlikely. even in raceways young bows get their parrmarks. plenty of wild streams around there that it is possible though. nice fish

Figured it was unlikely and ...
I just noticed the big honkin tail deformity that screams genetic mutant pellet head. Haha.

Yea, that's where I'd lean. The tail looks pretty messed up likely from rubbing the walls/floor in the concrete raceway. I think that's a holdover from last spring or from a fall stocking that has eaten well & gained some color as a result.

Ya, definitely a hatchery fish. That tail.... Generally rainbows(both stocked and wild) will lose their parr marks around that size, or they'll just be faint, but it isn't uncommon at all to still have them. Diet could play a role....idk. Nice looking fish though
